DAMASCUS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Syrian opposition groups at home voiced vehement rejection of the idea of armed uprising while other moderate groups stressed on a compromise between adamant opposition groups outside Syria and the ruling leadership to salvage the country from menacing dangers.
Syrian dissidents agreed in principle Sunday to form a seven- member executive committee for their national council, an idea that was cautiously welcomed by some parties and rejected by others, following three days of deliberations behind closed doors in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul.
Some Syrian opposition figures in Syria said it's the right of Syrians at home and abroad to convene conferences to unite their future perspective and agree on a united work plan.
Burhan Ghalyoun, a Syrian activist and dissident living aboard, who presided over the Istanbul meeting, said Sunday that the opposition outside Syria has agreed on the necessity of establishing a democratic system.
Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir, member of the executive committee's politburo, said Istanbul meeting was a "big crack in the efforts of uniting the opposition."
He stressed that the committee is against military intervention and is backing a democratic change with peaceful means.
He told Xinhua that the opposition groups outside should have better coordinated stance with the opposition inside Syria, adding that "the Istanbul meeting is not the end."
The general coordinator of the committee, Hassan Abdul-Azim, brushed aside speculations that the Istanbul meeting would have dire repercussions on the opposition inside Syria, saying that the conference is "a step on the road of uniting the opposition inside and outside Syria."
"Uniting the opposition requires a common political vision focusing on four main issues: ending the current security regime, rejecting military intervention, rejecting all aspects of armament inside Syria and all sectarian rifts."
Some opposition figures on Sunday accused the Istanbul meeting of giving a blow to all efforts aiming at uniting the opposition, adding that invitations were sent to some individuals in the opposition but not to the Coordination Committee for the Forces of National Democratic Change.
Louay Hussein, a prominent Syrian opposition figure, said the Syrian opposition in Syria didn't boycott Istanbul meeting, however, he personally didn't receive any invitation to participate.
He told Xinhua by telephone, "it's normal to have differences in points of view among all opposition political parties either inside or outside Syria due to the size of challenges they are encountering."
The major point of difference, he said, is the call for arming the opposition in Syria and the issues of foreign military intervention and overthrowing the leadership.
Meanwhile, the recently formed "Third Way" movement that groups around 40 politicians and intellectuals deplored Monday the absence of appropriate climates to launch national dialogue to solve the current crisis in Syria, saying a compromise between the opposition and the government could salvage the country.
During a press conference, members of the movement voiced their support to the process of reforms announced by the Syrian government and called for the cessation of all kinds of violence.
They said the government should listen to the protestors' " righteous demands in a democratic homeland," noting that the Syrian army units should immediately return to their barracks along with all armed groups.
They recommended that special offices should open to receive peoples' complaints, hold accountable for all criminals, rioters and wrongdoers, as well as lay foundations for a supreme council for human rights "to protect the Syrian lives."
The movement said the sole way to end the crisis in the country is to launch a dialogue among all Syrians whether they are from the opposition and the leadership's supporters.
Muhammad Habash, one of the founders of the movement, urged the newly formed national council to put forward "logical and possible suggestions and genuine program to rescue Syria."
"We in the Third Way work for building bridges between the state and the opposition," he said, reasserting the movement's absolute rejection of any military intervention in the country's affairs.
Habash said the security solution would never solve the problem, saying the government is to be partially blamed for the emergence of armed resistance "that jeopardizes our security and safety."
Syria has been wracked by six-month-old unrest it blames on foreign conspiracy and foreign thugs.
Syrian president's political and media adviser Buthayna Shaaban recently put the number of army officers and law-enforcement troops killed since the eruption of protests in Syria in mid March at 800, while a recent UN tally put the number of civilians who were allegedly gunned down by security forces at 2,700.

IDLIB, (SANA)_ The competent authorities on Monday seized amounts of different weapons near the Syrian-Turkish borders were smuggled to Syria.
The seized weapons included 156 pump-action shotguns, Kalashnikov rifles, 4 RPG launchers with 5 shells, various types of pistols and a long-rang sniper rifles and amounts of offensive and defensive grenades.

HOMS / HAMA, (SANA) – Two law enforcement members were martyred and two others injured in an ambush set up by an armed terrorist group in al-Sabouniyeh neighborhood in Hama City.
An official source in the governorate told SANA correspondent that the terrorist group surprised the law enforcement members, opened fire at them with automatic firearms and threw bombs at them.
The attack resulted in the immediate martyrdom of two law enforcement members and the injury of two others who were transported to Hama National Hospital in critical condition.
The source added that the authorities are chasing the responsible terrorist groups which fled after their crime.
In Homs governorate, an armed terrorist group killed and mutilated five citizens after abducting and torturing them.
A medical source in the governorate said that Homs National Hospital received four bodies from Basateen al-Qarabees in Homs bearing gunshot wounds and visible marks of torture.
Two bodies have been identified as belonging to citizen Hassan al-Hussein from Um al-Amd village and Chief Warrant Officer Muhammad Nour Eddin Qaroot from al-Khaldiyeh in Homs.
The source said that citizen Haifa Salloum was transported to al-Nahda Hospital in Homs. She was on the verge of death due to a gunshot to the chest.
A patrol from Homs Customs engaged an armed terrorist group near Shenshar Bridge on Monday morning, leading to the martyring of customs officer Issam Hammoud and the death of one gunman and the inuring of another.
An informed source told SANA's correspondent that the incident resulted in the death of Abdelrahman al-Shaikh Ali, one of the leaders of the armed groups in al-Rastan city who had fled the city after law-enforcement forces and the army restored order to the city, adding that one gunman was injured and the rest of the groups were arrested and their weapons were confiscated.
Another armed terrorist group robbed a truck loaded with 40 tons of steel in al-Qusair region in Homs.
A source in Homs governorate told SANA correspondent that a number of gunmen stopped the car and forced the driver to get out.
The source added that the pursuing of armed terrorist groups in al-Rastan resulted in arresting dozens of wanted criminals and seizing large amount of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Syrian troops going house to house have detained more than 3,000 people in the past three days in a rebellious town that government forces recently retook in some of the worst fighting since the country's uprising began six months ago, an activist said Monday.
In the rebellious central town of Rastan, which the government retook on Saturday, an activist told The AP by telephone that security forces have detained more than 3,000 residents since Saturday. He said the detainees were being held at a cement factory, as well as some schools and the Sports Club, a massive four-story compound.
"Ten of my relatives have been detained," said the activist, who asked that he be identified by his first name, Hassan. He said was he speaking from hiding in Rastan.
"The situation in the town is miserable," he said, adding that the town of some 70,000 people was heavily bombed for five days starting Tuesday when the army launched an offensive.
Syrian activists say the fighting in Rastan pitted the Syrian military against hundreds of army defectors who sided with the anti-regime protesters, who are calling for Assad's ouster. The clashes in Rastan were among the worst the country has seen since the uprising began in mid-March.
Hassan said that as of Sunday, the regime brought into Rastan thousands of workers to clean up the streets and rebuild damaged areas in what appeared to be an attempt to cover the damage caused by intense shelling. He added that food stuffs also were brought into the town.
Syria's state-media said troops took control of Rastan after hunting down "armed terrorists" holed up inside. But the fighting there highlighted the increasingly militarized nature of an uprising started months ago by peaceful protesters.

AMMAN: Syrian forces hunted for insurgents in the central region of Homs on Monday to crush armed resistance that is emerging after six months of protests against President Bashar Al-Assad's rule.
The crackdown came a day after Syrian opposition groups meeting in Istanbul urged international action to stop what they called indiscriminate killings of civilians by the authorities.
Local activists said a military operation was now focused on Talbiseh near Homs, 150 km (94 miles) north of Damascus, after security forces entered the nearby town of Rastan, which lies on the highway between the capital and the northern city of Aleppo.
For about a week, tank- and helicopter-backed troops had battled insurgents and army deserters in Rastan, in the most sustained fighting since Syria's uprising began in March.
The official Syrian news agency said on Saturday government forces had regained control of the town.
"Tank fire targeted Talbiseh this morning and communications remain cut. The town was key in supplying Rastan and now it is being punished for that," one activist said. "House to house arrests are continuing in the area for the second day."

More than 20 Syrian soldiers have infiltrated 500 meters deep into Lebanese territory in the northern province of Akkar, An Nahar newspaper reported on Monday.
It quoted sources on the Lebanese-Syrian border as saying that the soldiers entered the area of Rajam Beit Khalaf and al-Kalkha in Wadi Khaled.
The sources said residents saw the 20 soldiers entering the outskirts of their villages and heading towards the valley of al-Sarhaniyeh river. By Monday morning, it was not clear if the Syrian troops were still in the valley that separates Lebanon from the neighboring country.
Investigation is underway to figure out "what is happening on the ground in this region," the sources added.
A unit from the Syrian military accidentally fired at the Lebanese army after it infiltrated northern Lebanon two weeks ago, reported the National News Agency.
It said that a 15-member unit entered an area near the town of al-Mwanseh as it was following shepherds along the Lebanese-Syrian border.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Recent assassinations of Syrian academics stoke fears among Syrians over the bleak future of the country's brain drain, a matter reminiscent of the migration of professors and academics from Iraq following the collapse of the Iraqi regime.
No one has taken responsibility for the killings. But Syrian government and Syrian oppositions are trading accusations, each of them holding the other accountable for the murders, so far, nine prominent Syrian academics and professors.
The latest murdered was Muhammad al-Omar, a history professor at Aleppo University who was gunned down on Sunday by unidentified gunmen, along with Saryah Hassoun, the son of Syria's grand mufti Ahmed Hassoum, a staunch supporter of the Syrian regime.
The unrest erupted in Syria since mid March gradually turned into violent acts targeting civilians, security agents and policemen. Violence has climaxed recently and evoked painful feelings among Syrians with mounting uncertainties over "what would be the next."
Ramy Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an unlicensed organization and known for its anti-regime stands, accused in a statement that what he called "those close to the regime," were responsible for the murders.
However, Syria's state TV aired a recent interview with an alleged murderer of Dr. Hassan Eid, a chest surgeon who were killed last week in the central province of Homs, and the culprit confessed that he committed his crimes for money.
Khaled Abboud, a Syrian MP, told Xinhua that the country has entered a new era dubbed as the "era of wide terrorist explosions. "
Aboud warned that the country would witness more assassinations, which would be "neither in the country's interest nor in the opposition's."
George Jabbour, a local political analyst, told Xinhua that the killing of academics did not follow any sectarian agenda since the murdered intellectuals belong to different sectors. He accused some "foreign intelligence apparatuses" of being involved in the assassination "that are carried out on ground by armed groups."
For many, assassinating intellectuals and talented individuals is robbing Syria of its future. The underlying causes of these murders are still unknown.
"We are losing the best professionals, the real losers are the new generation and the future of Syria is what is at stake," said Mamoun Ali, a university student.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Recent assassinations of Syrian academics stoke fears among Syrians over the bleak future of the country's brain drain, a matter reminiscent of the migration of professors and academics from Iraq following the collapse of the Iraqi regime.
No one has taken responsibility for the killings. But Syrian government and Syrian oppositions are trading accusations, each of them holding the other accountable for the murders, so far, nine prominent Syrian academics and professors.
The latest murdered was Muhammad al-Omar, a history professor at Aleppo University who was gunned down on Sunday by unidentified gunmen, along with Saryah Hassoun, the son of Syria's grand mufti Ahmed Hassoum, a staunch supporter of the Syrian regime.
The unrest erupted in Syria since mid March gradually turned into violent acts targeting civilians, security agents and policemen. Violence has climaxed recently and evoked painful feelings among Syrians with mounting uncertainties over "what would be the next."
Ramy Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an unlicensed organization and known for its anti-regime stands, accused in a statement that what he called "those close to the regime," were responsible for the murders.
However, Syria's state TV aired a recent interview with an alleged murderer of Dr. Hassan Eid, a chest surgeon who were killed last week in the central province of Homs, and the culprit confessed that he committed his crimes for money.
Khaled Abboud, a Syrian MP, told Xinhua that the country has entered a new era dubbed as the "era of wide terrorist explosions. "
Aboud warned that the country would witness more assassinations, which would be "neither in the country's interest nor in the opposition's."
George Jabbour, a local political analyst, told Xinhua that the killing of academics did not follow any sectarian agenda since the murdered intellectuals belong to different sectors. He accused some "foreign intelligence apparatuses" of being involved in the assassination "that are carried out on ground by armed groups."
For many, assassinating intellectuals and talented individuals is robbing Syria of its future. The underlying causes of these murders are still unknown.
"We are losing the best professionals, the real losers are the new generation and the future of Syria is what is at stake," said Mamoun Ali, a university student.

"As offered by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, tourists can visit the four countries with the joint visa," AghaMuhammadi told ISNA.
The measure seeks lessening tourists' expenses and facilitating tourism in the four countries.
The name of the visa "Shamgen" is offered by Erdogan.
Shamgen is named after "Sham" which is the classical Arabic name of Syria, he added.
The Iranian official continued the four countries have also agreed to boost free trade under creating a large free trade zone.
Initial steps for the goal between Iran and Syria are closing to final phases and the two countries have offered their final acts to be approved in their parliaments.

Failing to heed calls from Turkey and some other countries, including the US, the Assad regime pressed ahead with its violent handling of the uprising, losing all legitimacy in the eyes of the international community.
Agreeing with Tütüncü, Veysel Ayhan from Abant İzzet Baysal University in Bolu also thinks that Turkey makes a distinction between regimes and its people when a sanction is on the agenda. Turkey's priority is to ratchet up pressure on governments rather than worsen the living conditions of people when it plans to implement sanctions.
Ayhan also believes that any economic sanctions Turkey imposes on Syria will also directly affect Turkey's economic relations with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other countries in the region. This is another reason why, Ayhan says, decision makers in Ankara will be very prudent in devising the kind of sanctions it plans to apply.
The abolishment of visa requirements between Turkey and Syria in 2009 led to an explosion in trade between the two. But the recent crisis has cast a shadow over the future of economic relations between the neighbors. There are, however, Turkish experts who dispute the expected impact of Turkey's sanctions on the Syrian regime. Professor Gökhan Bacık of the Gaziantep-based Zirve University thinks that the possible economic sanctions will not have a significant impact on the Assad regime.
He said that 80 percent of the Syrian economy depends on oil production, thus if the EU, the biggest buyer of Syrian oil, does not cut its imports of oil from that country, no other sanction imposed can be effective in changing the regime's policies. "The Turkish investment in Syria has been made by small businessmen from southeastern Anatolia. When one takes a close look at these investments, it can be seen that there are only a few Turkish investments in Syria that exceed $50 million in value, " Bacık said.

TEHRAN (ISNA)-Iran, Turkey, Syria and Iraq have agreed on issuing joint visa, said Iranian deputy Vice President Ali AghaMuhammadi.
"As offered by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, tourists can visit the four countries with the joint visa," AghaMuhammadi told ISNA.
The measure seeks lessening tourists' expenses and facilitating tourism in the four countries.
The name of the visa "Shamgen" is offered by Erdogan.
Shamgen is named after "Sham" which is the classical Arabic name of Syria, he added.
The Iranian official continued the four countries have also agreed to boost free trade under creating a large free trade zone.
Initial steps for the goal between Iran and Syria are closing to final phases and the two countries have offered their final acts to be approved in their parliaments.
Iran has taken actions towards Turkey and Iraq as well.

A French businessman says President Nicholas Sarkozy and Interior Minister Claude Gueant must acknowledge their roles in the kickbacks on the arms deal and illegal funding.
In an interview with French financial newspaper La Tribune published on Saturday, French millionaire arms broker Ziad Takieddine said that he was commissioned by Gueant, Sarkozy's former presidential election campaign head, to conclude arms contracts with former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"I remember telling Gueant: You know me more than anyone else. Each of my acts amount to an official mission," Takieddine stated.
"I went to see Gaddafi in Libya, and Assad in Syria only on the request and authorization from the president," the Franco-Lebanese businessman added.
The remarks come as Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam had said in March that Libya would publicize all the bank details relating to Sarkozy's campaign funding in 2007.
In a half-dozen interviews this weekend, Takieddine has called on Sarkozy to lift the lid on French arms sales to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that were illegally kicked back to fund the 1994-5 presidential campaign of Edouard Balladur.
Sarkozy, Balladur's budget minister and presidential campaign spokesman at the time, has validated the commission system.
Takieddine also told La Liberation that he has met twice with Sarkozy when he was the French interior minister.
The Franco-Lebanese millionaire, however, denies having served as a middleman for the diversion of commissions from French arms deals.
Takieddine is said to have received payment from a sale of frigates to Saudi Arabia, a contract authorized in 1994 by Sarkozy.
Documents obtained by examining magistrates suggest that he has received €91 million (USD 120 million) between 1997 and 1998.
France also signed a deal that year to sell three submarines to Pakistan. Several witnesses have told the magistrates that Takieddine was imposed by the Balladur camp as an intermediary.
French judge Renaud van Ruymbeke believes that through offshore accounts in Luxembourg Takieddine has returned a portion of the money earned via arms contracts to France. He, however, has withdrawn the money from his accounts once he was in Switzerland.
The judge has found that at least €3 million (USD 4 million) as parts of the "commissions" were siphoned off to help fund the 1994 presidential campaign of Edouard Balladur, then prime minister.
Takieddine was charged in September with fraud over arms contracts with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in which he was allegedly the middleman.
Nicolas Bazire, 54, the manager of Balladur's presidential campaign and now a director of luxury goods giant LVMH, and Gaubert, 60, an advisor to Sarkozy when he was budget minister, have also been charged with the misuse of public funds.

U.S. police arrested yesterday more than 500 protesters, anti-Wall Street for bridge traffic routes and trying to organize a march without a permit and the Brooklyn Bridge has reopened after being closed for hours, in the second week of protests organized by the Movement / occupied the Wall Street /.

A French businessman says President Nicholas Sarkozy and Interior Minister Claude Gueant must acknowledge their roles in the kickbacks on the arms deal and illegal funding.
In an interview with French financial newspaper La Tribune published on Saturday, French millionaire arms broker Ziad Takieddine said that he was commissioned by Gueant, Sarkozy's former presidential election campaign head, to conclude arms contracts with former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"I remember telling Gueant: You know me more than anyone else. Each of my acts amount to an official mission," Takieddine stated.
"I went to see Gaddafi in Libya, and Assad in Syria only on the request and authorization from the president," the Franco-Lebanese businessman added.
The remarks come as Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam had said in March that Libya would publicize all the bank details relating to Sarkozy's campaign funding in 2007.
In a half-dozen interviews this weekend, Takieddine has called on Sarkozy to lift the lid on French arms sales to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that were illegally kicked back to fund the 1994-5 presidential campaign of Edouard Balladur.
Sarkozy, Balladur's budget minister and presidential campaign spokesman at the time, has validated the commission system.
Takieddine also told La Liberation that he has met twice with Sarkozy when he was the French interior minister.
The Franco-Lebanese millionaire, however, denies having served as a middleman for the diversion of commissions from French arms deals.
Takieddine is said to have received payment from a sale of frigates to Saudi Arabia, a contract authorized in 1994 by Sarkozy.
Documents obtained by examining magistrates suggest that he has received €91 million (USD 120 million) between 1997 and 1998.
France also signed a deal that year to sell three submarines to Pakistan. Several witnesses have told the magistrates that Takieddine was imposed by the Balladur camp as an intermediary.
French judge Renaud van Ruymbeke believes that through offshore accounts in Luxembourg Takieddine has returned a portion of the money earned via arms contracts to France. He, however, has withdrawn the money from his accounts once he was in Switzerland.
The judge has found that at least €3 million (USD 4 million) as parts of the "commissions" were siphoned off to help fund the 1994 presidential campaign of Edouard Balladur, then prime minister.
Takieddine was charged in September with fraud over arms contracts with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in which he was allegedly the middleman.
Nicolas Bazire, 54, the manager of Balladur's presidential campaign and now a director of luxury goods giant LVMH, and Gaubert, 60, an advisor to Sarkozy when he was budget minister, have also been charged with the misuse of public funds.

MOSCOW, (SANA) - Dean of the Faculty of International Relations of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Igor Panarin on Sunday said that foreign intelligence agencies are working on igniting sedition in Syria.
In an interview with SANA, Panarin said that the western countries are trying to interfere in the Syrian internal affairs to undermine its stability and pivotal role in the Middle East.
He added that there are foreign sides that are working on escalating violence in Syria in addition to broadcasting false news about the situation in it.
Panarin reiterated Russia's rejection of any foreign interference in the Syrian internal affairs, adding that many countries- including China, India, Brazil and South Africa- share Russia's stance.

Minister of Irrigation George Soumi on Sunday discussed with the Chinese Ambassador in Damascus Chang Shi Yon cooperation between Syria and China in the field of irrigation and transporting water to dry lands.

People's Council held its first regular session of the third session of the legislative role of the ninth on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Dr. Mahmoud al-Abrash.
The cabinet will discuss the bills referred by the President of the Republic and the legislative decrees issued by the President pursuant to the provisions of Article 111 of the Constitution, the Legislative Decree No. 100 of 2011 on the law of parties and the Legislative Decree No. 101 on the law of the general election, which regulates elections of members of parliament and local councils and ensure the integrity of the process monitored and the right of election candidates and the Legislative Decree No. 107 containing the local administration law and the Legislative Decree No. 108 on the law of the media in addition to Decree 116 included amendments to article 8 of the Basic Law for state employees.

Trying to economic activities in Aleppo to overcome the effects of economic sanctions imposed on Syria, noting recently that it has limited impact so far and can be overcome through concerted efforts of these events, each according to its location.
The Director of Social Affairs and Labour spring of conspiracy to European sanctions aimed at weakening the Syrian economic environment is reflected negatively on the youth noting the need to speed up by government agencies to obtain decisions that will attract the category stalled work.
And the conspiracy to the Directorate is working to remedy the consequences of these sanctions through the creation of plans for temporary and quick it was agreed upon by the owners and workers to reduce hours of work, temporarily that is beyond the current crisis, noting the need to accelerate the Chamber of Industry to find alternative solutions and long-term by shifting to Industries based on local raw materials and operates at the same time to attract many of the labor force and expert.
The conspiracy to sectors that were affected directly through sanctions, including the tourism sector and the tissue in addition to the sector of medical limited, considering that the sanctions have contributed to high rates of unemployment, pointing out that the Chamber of Industry has worked to provide 6,000 job opportunities through the rehabilitation of a number of unemployed youth and providing them with practical experiences and attract.

Syrian opposition groups meeting in Istanbul on Sunday announced they had reached agreement on a united front, but their achievement was overshadowed by representatives of Syrian tribes who raided the hosting hotel and delayed the start of the gathering.
Representatives of Syrian tribes and dissidents who call themselves "Opposition on the Streets" raided the meeting of Syrian opposition movements and claimed they were being excluded from the opposition-formed Syrian National Council.
Representatives of the Syrian opposition movements were holding a meeting Sunday to announce that they had formed a common front uniting all groups that oppose the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. But the meeting started with a one-hour delay because the Syrian tribal representatives raided the hotel where the meeting was being held. "We will give the leaders of this council one month. If they don't fulfill the Syrian street hopes of ending and finishing the Assad regime and giving the Syrian resistance their freedom, then we will create another council that must be named from the Syrian streets, not from the exterior opposition, which will be considered illegitimate by the Syrian opposition inside," Methgal said.
Members of the Syrian National Council refused the claims and said the Arab tribes and representatives of the revolution were already represented in the council.
"The Syrian National Council is open to all Syrians. It is an independent group personifying the sovereignty of the Syrian people in their struggle for liberty," Paris-based Burhan Ghalioun told reporters. "The council rejects any outside interference that undermines the sovereignty of the Syrian people."
Ghalioun, a France-based academic, was recently designated leader of the opposition group National Transitional Council, which has Islamist and nationalist supporters.
The new opposition grouping announced on Sunday unites Syrian opposition movements across the political spectrum and includes local coordination committees that group activists on the ground, liberals, and the long-banned Muslim Brotherhood as well as Kurds and Syriacs.
Representatives of Syria's six-month-old protest movement and opposition had been meeting since Tuesday to forge a united front against Assad's regime, which the U.N. says has killed at least 2,700 people since protests erupted in mid-March.
