DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform has carried out several projects in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the framework of the joint technical cooperation between the two sides including cooperation projects funded by the FAO, and other projects funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Assistant of FAO Representative in Syria, Salim Zahwa said that there are many projects directly funded by the organization such as the technical cooperation projects (TCP), in addition to the Telefood projects.
He indicated that the underway projects cover all the agricultural sectors including the project of developing the organic agriculture implemented by the Agricultural Guidance Directorate and funded by the Italian Government with a budget of USD 2 millions.
The project of integrated management of forest fire is also implemented by Forests Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture with the participation of local bodies, and the project is funded by the Italian Government with a cost of USD 1,100,000.
The project aims at allowing the locals to participate in forest fire management, in addition to building capacities of the bodies concerned in forest fire.
The other implemented projects include the project of pesticides safe disposal, and the project of building capacities in the domain of sustainable forest management planning whose budget exceeded USD 300,000.
The FAO works on implementing a project on setting an agricultural strategy and policy to achieve the agricultural development and food security at al-Ghab area in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture with a budget of USD 474,000.
Zahwa indicated that the FAO also works on introducing new crops which have big economic value to Syria with the aim of supporting the national income, improving the living conditions of the farmers and curbing farmers' migration to the cities.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform has carried out several projects in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the framework of the joint technical cooperation between the two sides including cooperation projects funded by the FAO, and other projects funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Assistant of FAO Representative in Syria, Salim Zahwa said that there are many projects directly funded by the organization such as the technical cooperation projects (TCP), in addition to the Telefood projects.
He indicated that the underway projects cover all the agricultural sectors including the project of developing the organic agriculture implemented by the Agricultural Guidance Directorate and funded by the Italian Government with a budget of USD 2 millions.
The project of integrated management of forest fire is also implemented by Forests Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture with the participation of local bodies, and the project is funded by the Italian Government with a cost of USD 1,100,000.
The project aims at allowing the locals to participate in forest fire management, in addition to building capacities of the bodies concerned in forest fire.
The other implemented projects include the project of pesticides safe disposal, and the project of building capacities in the domain of sustainable forest management planning whose budget exceeded USD 300,000.
The FAO works on implementing a project on setting an agricultural strategy and policy to achieve the agricultural development and food security at al-Ghab area in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture with a budget of USD 474,000.
Zahwa indicated that the FAO also works on introducing new crops which have big economic value to Syria with the aim of supporting the national income, improving the living conditions of the farmers and curbing farmers' migration to the cities.

In Reyhanli, a main border crossing in Hatay, Turkish trucks queue for hours in a line snaking back several kilometres (miles). Drivers reported no let-up in work but some said they now faced hostility from some Syrians and felt increasingly unsafe.
"They swear at our prime minister. They say 'we stamp on Erdogan with our shoes'," said 31-year-old truck driver Mehmet Ozdemir, who was transporting oven materials to Syria.
"They tell us our women are being raped in the Turkish camps and say 'you're taking them to Antalya and selling them'," Ozdemir said, referring to a city on Turkey's Mediterranean coast popular with Turkish and foreign tourists.
More than 7,500 Syrian refugees are living in six camps in Hatay and last month, Syrian state media reported that women were being raped and tortured in the camps. Turkey has strongly denied the claims.
"It is hard now to travel through Syria. We used to make our own food by the side of the road or sit in a restaurant but now we don't stop, we just drive straight through because of the security," said another truck driver, Abdulwahid Erisik.
"Sometimes they stop our convoys on the road. They threaten you with a gun. They wear civilian clothes. I don't know if they are police, civilians or what," said Erisik.
For some, the hostility has led to resentment of Turkey's assistance to the thousands of Syrians seeking refuge in Hatay.
"They are all gypsies, they don't have an ID card in Syria so they come here to get a Turkish passport," said hairdresser Celik, referring to the Syrian refugees.
Turkey does not refer to them as refugees, saying they are "guests" and can come and go as they please.
"We don't have a problem with the Syrian people but we should sort out our problems first," said another truck driver who did not want to be named.

DUBAI: Arab leaders must be open to reform and listen to their peoples so that issues can be resolved without "conflict or protest," Qatar's prime minister said in a televised interview Sunday.

"Nothing happens in an Arab country, or any country around the world, without there being a smart Arab leader who learns lessons and tries to reform."
Since uprisings began 10 months ago, the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya have been toppled, while Syria and Yemen continue to see mass demonstrations against autocratic rule.
Qatar, along with other rich Gulf countries, have mostly been spared such protests thanks to cradle-to-grave benefits for their smaller populations.
Qatar, ruled by the Thani Sunni monarchy for more than a century, was a key backer of tribal forces fighting against Gadhafi and has an influential voice in the Arab world, thanks to the Doha-based Al-Jazeera and to its mediation efforts.
"It is in [our] interests for there to be intellectual and rational openness to any idea for reform that can benefit [our] countries," said Sheikh Hamad, a distant cousin of Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.
At the same time, Sheikh Hamad cautioned that violence was not the best way to bring about change: "We sympathize with all Arab countries and hope that this issue can be solved between governments and their people without going into conflict or protest."
In Bahrain, a Gulf island nation near Qatar, the Sunni-ruled monarchy crushed protests in February and March led mainly by majority Shiites demanding better access to jobs and benefits.
Al-Jazeera kept mostly silent on the protests, and last month its chief Waddah Khanfar stepped down, a sudden departure seen as a sign that the Qatar-backed broadcaster was toning down its coverage of regional unrest.

DUBAI: Arab leaders must be open to reform and listen to their peoples so that issues can be resolved without "conflict or protest," Qatar's prime minister said in a televised interview Sunday.
"Reform is not wrong – what's wrong is staying as you are and being arrogant at this time," Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani told Al-Arabiya at the World Economic Forum in Jordan, two days after the capture and killing of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi.
"Nothing happens in an Arab country, or any country around the world, without there being a smart Arab leader who learns lessons and tries to reform."
Since uprisings began 10 months ago, the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya have been toppled, while Syria and Yemen continue to see mass demonstrations against autocratic rule.
Qatar, along with other rich Gulf countries, have mostly been spared such protests thanks to cradle-to-grave benefits for their smaller populations.
Qatar, ruled by the Thani Sunni monarchy for more than a century, was a key backer of tribal forces fighting against Gadhafi and has an influential voice in the Arab world, thanks to the Doha-based Al-Jazeera and to its mediation efforts.
"It is in [our] interests for there to be intellectual and rational openness to any idea for reform that can benefit [our] countries," said Sheikh Hamad, a distant cousin of Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.
At the same time, Sheikh Hamad cautioned that violence was not the best way to bring about change: "We sympathize with all Arab countries and hope that this issue can be solved between governments and their people without going into conflict or protest."
In Bahrain, a Gulf island nation near Qatar, the Sunni-ruled monarchy crushed protests in February and March led mainly by majority Shiites demanding better access to jobs and benefits.
Al-Jazeera kept mostly silent on the protests, and last month its chief Waddah Khanfar stepped down, a sudden departure seen as a sign that the Qatar-backed broadcaster was toning down its coverage of regional unrest.

MONTREAL, (SANA) – The Syrian community in Canada on Sunday raised the longest Syrian flag outside Syria to express rejection of the foreign interference in the Syrian internal affairs.
More than two thousand people participated in the event in Montreal city, expressing gratitude for the countries that supported Syria.
They also expressed adherence to the national flag and support for reforms and national unity.

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday issued Decree No. 421 on the appointment of Yasser Salman al-Shoufi as Governor of Idlib and Hussein Makhlouf Makhlouf as Governor of Damascus Countryside.
Al-Shoufi replaced former governor Khalid al-Ahmad and Makhlouf succeeded former governor Zahid Haj Moussa.
Al-Shoufi was born in Sweida in 1953. He got B.A from the Faculty of Law.
He was appointed as the Chairman of the Police Scientific Institute in Damascus and the Chief of Police in Hasaka and later Chief of Police in Aleppo.
Engineer Makhlouf was born in Lattakia in 1964. Graduated from the Civil Engineering Faculty. He was appointed as the Head of Damascus Branch of al-Sahel Construction and Building Company and the General-Manager of the Public Association of Water Resources.

Sunday morning found the body of a young man in the second decade of age was found dead yesterday after he was kidnapped from the city of Idlib.
A source familiar with the matter disclosed to Aks al-Ser that "five people entered the Internet cafe downtown Idlib, and Mohammed Qabbani was a young man 17 years inside, and asked him to personal identity."
He continued, "and one said to the people inside the cafe there is a dispute with the young man in question and want to resolve it, and then they take him to an unknown place."
And the source added that "martyr Kabbani is a student in a secondary computer technology, and announced his family for his disappearance on Saturday inside an Internet cafe in the city, to be found this morning dead and lying near the junction town of Ephesus, his body was transferred to a hospital in Saraaqib and then transferred to the National Hospital Idlib where he was identified.
And source to Aks al-Ser said that "the young man was severely tortured before being killed was shot in the head.
It is noteworthy that the young man's father is a teacher at the institute industrial city of Idlib.

HAMA/HOMS (SANA) – The authorities in Homs on Sunday evening managed to rescue Dean of the Petrochemical Engineering Faculty at al-Baath University, Dr. Mohammad Khaddour, after a few hours of his abduction at the hands of an armed terrorist group.
Rector of al-Baath University Dr. Ahmad Mufid Sobh told SANA's correspondent that Dr. Khaddour was freed and returned to his home.
Earlier, an official source told SANA that the terrorist group intercepted the car of Dr. Khadour and kidnapped him along with a person accompanying him.
An armed terrorist group opened fire on a minibus carrying civilians in Cairo Street in Homs on Sunday evening, martyring Zaynab Yehea al-Hallaq al-Shaar, a student at al-Baath University's Science Faculty.
In Hama governorate, authorities arrested on two armed terrorists and wounded several others during a fire exchange as the terrorists were trying to attack an oil pipeline and steal fuel near Hama city.
An official source told SANA that three members from the competent authorities were injured during the fire exchange.
Meanwhile, the authorities in Ashira suburb in Homs city seized a weapon cache with several hand grenades, Molotov cocktails, AK-47 rifles and night-vision scopes.

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- The Customs authorities confiscated on Saturday a Kia Cerato car carrying amounts of currency of different types set to be smuggled into Lebanon through al-Jdeida border crossing point.
A source at the General Directorate of Customs said in a statement to SANA the confiscation was carried out after receiving information about the car, adding that "upon searching the car, a secret hiding place was found in the back seat containing an amount of money wrapped in nylon."
The source said the bundles, which were opened by a special committee from the Customs Directorate, were found to include 6050 pieces of SYP 1000 banknotes, 300 pieces of Saudi Riyal (SAR) 500 banknotes, 33 pieces of USD 50 banknotes and a Jordanian Dinar (JOD).
The total amount of confiscated money was estimated at SYP 8,135 million.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Terrorist Muhannad Fouad al-Assaf, a leader of an armed terrorist group in Homs, confessed to attacking government establishments, kidnapping, torturing and murdering citizens, shooting and killing demonstrators to frame the army and security forces, attacking army checkpoints, and vandalizing public and private property.
In confessions broadcast by the Syrian TV on Sunday, al-Assaf said that he was a neighbor of Bilal al-Ghen who invited him to his home and asked him to join him in demonstrations, to which al-Assaf agreed.
Al-Assaf, a barber born in 1974, said that al-Ghen tasked him with collecting money from specific people, two of which gave him a total of SYP 300,000 while the third, a woman named Fadia al-Jandali, have him a box of medicine, a box of ammo and SYP 500,000 she collected as donations from rich people she worked for as a cook.
"Bilal would go out in his pickup truck on which he mounted a machinegun and opened fire on the Police Command… we also broke street and traffic signs… he told us that he will arm us and indeed he gave us weapons and I formed an armed group consisting of 9 people while Bilal's group contained more than 20 gunmen," he said.
"We began by opening fire on protestors, killing ten of them to accuse the government of killing them… we also attacked the Trade Union and the Workers Pharmacy which we attacked ten times… we attacked an infirmary in al-Khalidiya and opened fire on it," al-Assad elaborated, adding that Bilal's cousin Majed al-Ghen fired an RPG round at the infirmary.
"We attacked dozens of checkpoints in Homs… We attacked the school of Yousuf al-Azma in al-Khalidyah neighborhood. We were about 100 gunmen… we had AK-47 rifles and pump-action shotguns. Bilal had a machinegun. Bilal used to give me money to buy rifles, pump-action shotguns, RPG rounds, grenades and ammunition from 'Khalid al-Zoubi' from Tel Kalakh area." He confessed.
He indicated that the weapons were coming to them through vehicles transporting vegetables from Lebanon, smuggling weapons from Beirut to Tel Kalakh to Bab Amro in Homs, then they would phone Bilal to receive them.
"In one operation, we smuggled 15 RPG rounds and about ten hand-made explosive charges. Bilal had two Thuraya satellite phones and several mobile phones," al-Assaf said, pointing out that the group of Bilal al-Ghen abducted people and took them to a house in Old Homs, where they beat them up and tortured them before putting them in a car.
"I would drive this car to distant areas… We killed several people and dumped their bodies… I knew some of the people whom we killed. One of them was Ahmad al-Abrash and another was called Bashar. I was among the group that killed al-Abrash," he said.
On the attack on the Homs Police Command, al-Assaf said "Bilal phoned Abdul-Minim Kolko, AKA Abu Hassan, then Bilal asked us to go by car to observe if there are nearby army or law-enforcement personnel. Bilal then went in his pick-up truck with a machinegun mounted on it and opened fire on the Police Command along with his cousins."
He concluded that "Once, we attacked the Police Command with grenades and RPG rounds… Bilal's group also killed a policeman at night on Hama Road."

HAMA, (SANA) – Two people died and three others were injured on Sunday when a Pullman collided with a locomotive on Hama-Aleppo Highway.
Sources said the collision led to the death of a Jordanian person and a woman from Aleppo city, while the drivers and another person were injured.
Primary investigations showed that the collision happened because of exceeding the speed limit and the drivers' inattention.
