Syria tensions mount with attack on pilgrims, PM lashes out at Assad

A passenger on one of the three buses attacked by Syrian forces shows traces of the attack, which left one pilgrim and a bus driver wounded.

Tensions with neighboring Syria, once a close ally of Turkey, took a new turn on Monday as the Foreign Ministry announced that buses carrying Turkish pilgrims back to Turkey had come under attack in Syria and two were wounded.

Last week Turkey delivered a formal protest to Syria and evacuated its diplomatic personnel after supporters of President Bashar al-Assad attacked Turkish diplomatic missions. The attack on the pilgrims, on the other hand, was the first of its kind as it was carried out by Syrian soldiers, according to the accounts of the buses' passengers.

Passengers disembarking in Cizre, near the Syrian border, said they had been told to disembark at a checkpoint near the city of Homs by uniformed Syrian soldiers. One passenger said the soldiers started firing randomly at the pilgrims as they ran away after getting off the bus.

One of the drivers of the three buses and a pilgrim were injured in the armed attack.

In London, Turkish President Abdullah Gül told reporters that the bus had mistakenly entered a restive area and that this was the primary reason it was attacked, adding that he was informed the incident should not be exaggerated. He said these are dangerous developments and that he hopes nothing like this will happen again. Recalling an attack on Turkish diplomatic missions across Syria by pro-regime protesters last week, Gül said Damascus will punish those who attacked the missions.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who promised the Syrian regime will receive a "response" after pro-Assad groups burned Turkish flags during the attacks on Turkish diplomatic missions, repeated his harsh criticisms of Assad on Monday, saying he cannot remain in power forever by attacking his own people with tanks. "We see it as inhumane to attack with tanks and fire shells people who demand their rights, who want a better life," Erdoğan told a meeting of religious leaders from Africa in İstanbul. "If you, as a leader, trust yourself, you should open the ballot boxes to see if the results from those boxes keep you in power.

You can rule your country if the votes bring you to power, but you can only rely on tanks and shells [to remain in power] up to a certain point."

Erdoğan did not mention the attack on the pilgrims and it was not clear whether he had yet been made aware of it. Turkey has not formally called for Assad's withdrawal, but Erdoğan, who, with his wife, once vacationed with the Assad family, has recently toughened his rhetoric against Assad, addressing him with his first name in a lack of respect for the Syrian leader.

"The day will come when you will have to go because positions of power are temporary. We have said this many times." He said that Bashar failed to heed Erdoğan's warning in spite of the friendly ties between the two leaders' families.

He also belittled what he saw as Assad's attempts to win the support of devout Syrians by having his picture taken with imams during Eid al-Adha prayers last month. "He poses with an imam. Who is he fooling? Apparently the naïve Muslims in his country," he said.

"Oppression never lasts forever. The oppressors will never win. Sooner or later, the oppressed will win," Erdoğan went on to say. Erdoğan also criticized Assad's remarks over the weekend when the Syrian leader defiantly vowed to fight and die if needed as an Arab League deadline for his government to stop its lethal crackdown on protesters expired with 20 more people killed.

"Someone shows up and says, 'I'll fight and die.' Against whom will you fight? Will you fight against your Muslim brothers you rule in your country?" said Erdoğan. "We never considered the killing of Syrian people with tanks and cannons 'humane'."

Anger at Erdoğan

Erdoğan's remarks are likely to further increase the fury at him among pro-Assad circles in Syria. In remarks after the bus attack in Syria, Erhan Sürmeli, one of the drivers, said the attackers cursed Erdoğan.

"We had stopped at a checkpoint," Sürmeli told the Associated Press. "Syrian soldiers emerged from behind sandbags and cursed Recep Tayyip Erdoğan when we told them we were Turks. Then they suddenly opened fire on the bus." "They were hidden in their hideouts. ... These were soldiers, these were not civilians. Their flags were there," a male passenger in his 30s said. "I had nothing in my hands; there were seven or eight of them. He cocked his gun at me and said, 'Put your hands up.'... I shouted for everyone to run. We ran and they started firing at our backs. God saved us," the passenger said. "We have returned from death," said another middle-aged male passenger, sobbing as he spoke.

It was not immediately clear when the incident occurred, but it appears to have taken place over Sunday night. The wounded were being treated at a hospital in Antakya in Turkey's Hatay province, just across the Turkish border. Following the attack, the Turkish Foreign Ministry recalled a warning it had issued for Turkish citizens planning to travel to Syria. Last week, the ministry issued a second warning to Turkish nationals not to travel to Syria unless absolutely necessary due to difficulties in establishing public order, while also urging those currently in Syria to be cautious and remain in contact with Turkish missions at all times following the pro-regime attacks on Turkish missions in Syria.
