DAMASCUS, (SANA) - The Central Bank of Syria (CBS) on Wednesday interfered in the exchange market for the fourth time in a row to sell USD 41,925 million in foreign currency to exchange companies and offices at SYP 53.01 per USD.
The CBS Governor Adib Mayala said today's interference aims to restore stability in the market and to assure the citizens that the Syrian Pound is strong, noting that the rise in the exchange currency rate in the black market is exaggerated. He stressed that the supply of Dollar at the market is sufficient to meet the demand.
On November 17, the Central Bank interfered in the exchange market for the third time when it sold foreign currency of USD 15 million. USD 5 million and USD 13.5 million were previously sold during October.
According to the CBS weekly report, the SYP/USD opened the week's trade at 49.83 and closed at 50.10, recording a 0.53 % rise, while the Euro started off the weekly trading against the SYP at 68.49 and closed at 67.70 with a drop of 1.16%.
The CBS has recently started to move the SYP/USD exchange rate in accordance with the global exchange rate movements in a way that reflects the changes in the local supply and demand of foreign currency.
The CBS decision came after the recent US sanctions which led Syria to replace the Dollar with other currencies. This move ensures better stability of the SYP exchange rate against other foreign currencies after the CBS had fixed the SYP exchange rate against Dollar since the crisis started.
The Central Bank continues to meet the market's needs of different currencies to keep the exchange processes going on and prevent any freeze due to the imposed sanctions.
It has included the Chinese Yuan in its daily exchange rates bulletin since last September to facilitate trading in light of heading eastward, particularly towards China.
The local market is witnessing a remarkable improvement in the trading in the Euro after the CBS decision to stop dealing in the Dollar and shift to other currencies.
