Gulfsands Syria exploration not hampered by sanctions

LONDON Dec 14 (Reuters) - Gulfsands Petroleum said its exploration activities in Syria remained ongoing and would not be restricted by the recent introduction of additional European Union (EU) sanctions on oil production in Syria.

"The company is continuing with drilling of the Khurbet East 102 appraisal well, which is anticipated to be completed in approximately forty days," Gulfsands, which produces over 90 percent of its total output in Syria, said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Upon completion of the KHE-102 well, the group will assess whether the impact of EU sanctions on service providers and others involved in the company's exploration activities permits the safe continuation the group's exploration programme."

The EU stepped up its sanctions against Syria's oil industry earlier this month, blacklisting state-owned firms including GPC that oversee trade and exploration, as part of international efforts to isolate President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Gulfsands said on Monday that it had shut down their oil operations in Syria following the sanctions.

Gulfsands also said it had suspended its share buy-back programme "in the interests of conserving cash" after having bought back some 4.6 million shares for 8.7 million pounds ($13.52 million).

The company said it had also found that its Yousefieh Field was subject to strong pressure support, which would have "positive implications for ultimately recoverable oil volumes at the Yousefieh field."

「アラブの春」と呼ばれる民主化運動が続く中東で、アサド政権が反体制デモへの弾圧を続けているシリア。その首都ダマスカスに、FNNの取材班が入った。

衝突が始まった3月以降、海外メディアの入国が厳しく制限されているシリアに日本のメディアが入るのは初めて。

佐々木 亮記者の報告です。

FNNの取材班は、シリア政府のビザ発給を受けて、13日首都ダマスカスに入った。

ダマスカス市内の市場では、仕事を終えた人々が買い物に繰り出すなど、普段通りの生活を送っている。

市内は夜も出歩けるなど、治安は極めて安定した状態となっている。

ダマスカス市民は「見ての通り、何の問題もなく平穏だ。アサド大統領は、いい大統領で、よくやっている」と話した。

話を聞いた市民からは、政権に対する批判や疑問の声は聞かれず、ダマスカスが完全に政権側の掌握下にあることがわかる。

国連は、デモ弾圧による死者が5,000人を超えたとして非難しているが、シリア政府は、弾圧ではなく、テロリストの取り締まりと位置づけていて、市民の殺害も否定している。

取材班が案内された軍専用の病院には、反体制派の戦闘でけがをしたという軍人が、数多く入院していた。

負傷した軍人は、「(誰に攻撃された?)武装した何者かにやられた」、「(軍が市民を殺害しているとの報道は本当か?)負傷したほとんどの人が軍人なのだから、その報道は本当ではない」などと話した。

シリア軍幹部は、取材に対し、テロリストの攻撃で軍人が800人以上死亡し、5,000人以上が負傷したと説明し、国際社会の主張と食い違いを見せている。

今回のシリアでの取材は、FNNが提出した取材希望項目の中から、シリア政府が許可したものを、情報省の係官が随行のうえ行った。
