AMMAN - As farmers counted their losses after a two-week frost spell that damaged thousands of dunums of crops, authorities on Saturday warned that low temperatures this week may again threaten the Kingdom's agriculture.

Frost warnings are issued when clear skies are coupled with temperatures near or below zero and southeasterly winds, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD), which issued a new frost alert on Saturday.

Meteorologists said that temperatures this week will range between a high of 15ºC during the day and a low of 1ºC at night in the capital, with sub-zero temperatures expected in the desert and hilly areas.

The recent frost damaged 30,000 dunums of farmland around the country, mainly affecting tomatoes, whose prices have skyrocketed after supply in the market fell, Ministry of Agriculture officials said yesterday.

"Thousands of dunums planted with tomatoes in Mafraq were completely damaged after temperatures dipped to below zero. This has sent prices up," Najah Masalha, head of the Jordan Valley Agriculture Directorate, said yesterday.

Farmers in Mafraq plant tomatoes twice a year, she explained, the early season starting in February and the late season in August.

"The late season of tomatoes was damaged this year… prices are expected to drop soon once tomatoes harvested in Ghor Safi are supplied to the markets," Masalha told The Jordan Times.

She added that the usually warm Jordan Valley was also affected, citing reports indicating that the two-week frost spell damaged 1,000 dunums there.

"Up to 150 dunums of crops were 90 per cent damaged, especially in the Northern Ghor. The percentage of damage in the remaining areas ranged between 5 per cent and 30 per cent and the affected crops were mainly zucchini and beans," Masalha elaborated.

The Jordan Valley's total agricultural area consists of 250,000 dunums, 170,000 of which are planted with vegetables and the rest with bananas, grains and citrus fruits.

Ministry of Agriculture Spokesperson Nimer Haddadin added yesterday that crops in the southern and central regions of the country were also affected by the frost spell.

"Farmers are urged to prepare for frost spells by irrigating crops at night to increase soil temperature, close greenhouses to keep the heat in, and light fires to warm up the surrounding air," Haddadin told The Jordan Times yesterday.
