Sarkozy insists: Turkey not part of EU
http://www.todayszaman.com/news-259157-sarkozy-insists-turkey-not-part-of-eu.html
07 October 2011, Friday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on a tour of Caucasus countries, repeated his well-known opposition to Turkey's membership in the European Union on Friday, saying his country does not consider Turkey a part of the 27-nation bloc.

"Located in Asia Minor, Turkey has an important role in the world. It is a bridge between the East and the West," Sarkozy was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying at a news conference during his visit to Armenia, his first stop on his Caucasus trip. "But this role is outside the EU. France does not see Turkey in the EU."

Sarkozy, who has said he wants Turkey to be given special partnership status with the EU rather than full membership, is regarded by many Turks as the embodiment of European prejudice towards a Muslim country. The French leader, who seeks to boost his ratings before an April presidential election, said Turkey was "successful," apparently in reference to its growing activism in the region. "But my thoughts on Turkey's EU membership have not changed and there is no reason why they should change," Sarkozy was quoted as saying.

During his visit to Armenia, Sarkozy also urged Turkey to recognize the 1915 killings of Armenians as genocide, threatening to pass a law in France that would make denying this a crime. "The Armenian genocide is a historical reality. Collective denial is even worse than individual denial," Sarkozy told reporters. "Turkey, which is a great country, would honor itself to revisit its history like other great countries in the world have done."

Turkey, in response, said France should confront its colonial past before giving lessons to others on how to face history. "Those who will not be able to face their own history for having carried out colonialism for centuries, for treating foreigners as second-class people, do not have the right to teach Turkey a history lesson or call for Turkey to face its history," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu told reporters on Friday.

Turkey calls on Sarkozy to look in the mirror on history controversy

07 October 2011, Friday / TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA

Amidst of the row between the two countries, French Interior Minister Claude Gueant met with Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin to sign an agreement on cooperation in domestic security.

In harsh response to recent remarks by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who called on Turkey to face its history and recognize the 1915 massacre of Armenians as genocide, Turkey said on Friday that France should look in the mirror before asking Turkey to revisit its history.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu told reporters after his meeting with Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) on the country's foreign policy that he finds Sarkozy's remarks as an example of "political populism." He said his statements were wrong and were aimed for [France's] domestic politics. … Any state or society who has a colonial past and cannot face its own history does not have the right to give lessons to Turkey. Those who want Turkey face its history should look into mirror," the minister said. Sarkozy on Thursday urged Turkey to recognize the 1915 incidents as genocide, threatening to pass a law in France that would make denying this a crime.

"The Armenian genocide is a historical reality. Collective denial is even worse than individual denial," Sarkozy told reporters.

"Turkey, which is a great country, would honor itself to revisit its history like other great countries in the world have done," the French president added. On Friday, Sarkozy made further comments on the issue, calling Turkey to "make a gesture of reconciliation," and warning that if Turkey refrained from taking any steps, France would consider amending its legislation to penalize denial, Reuters reported. Sarkozy did not give a date for such a move, but noted that measures could be adopted "in a very brief time."

Turkey's Minister for European Union Affairs Egemen Bağış was also highly critical of Sarkozy's remarks and called on the French president to "think over how he would save his country from the economic turmoil it has fallen into instead of assuming the role of historians."

AMMAN - More senators holding dual nationalities on Thursday submitted their resignations in compliance with the new Constitution, which prohibits Jordanians who have another nationality from holding ministerial, senatorial and parliamentary posts.

Senators Muhammad Hamdan and Abdul Hamid Shoman submitted their resignations to Senate President Taher Masri.

Their peers Talal Abu Ghazaleh, Khaled Sharif and Suhair Al-Ali also resigned earlier this week for the same reason.

Under the amendments made to Article 75 of the Constitution, which went into effect Saturday, "no person can become a deputy, senator, minister or a high-ranking official if he/she holds dual nationality".

Masri confirmed the resignations in a telephone interview with The Jordan Times Thursday. "With these new resignations, I think there are no Upper House members now holding dual nationality," he said.

Israel to Assad: We Will Bomb Gaza, Whole of Lebanon if Tel Aviv Attacked

Israel has warned Syrian President Bashar Assad that should Tel Aviv be attacked, then it will retaliate by bombing the Gaza Strip and the whole of Lebanon.

Israel's NFC website reported that the Jewish state's government relayed this message to the Syrian president through European intelligence circles.

These sources said that seeing as Tel Aviv is Israel's economic and financial hub, a retaliation for an attack against it, by Hizbullah, Hamas, or Syria, will not be limited to Syria, but all of Lebanon and Gaza.

NFC reported Israeli military circles as saying that the Jewish state's message to Assad "is clear in that Damascus' fate, should it be targeted, will not be different than Lebanon's."

These revelations came in light of an Iranian report that Assad had warned that he would "set fire" to the Middle East if foreign forces launched a military strike on his country and would ask for Hizbullah's help to attack Israel.

An Arab source told Iran's Fars news Agency that Assad made the warning to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during his visit to Damascus.

"If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv," the Syrian president said.

On Thursday, an official source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry denied these reports, adding that "no messages were conveyed from or to anyone during the meeting."

The Iranian news agency did not indicate the date of the meeting between the two officials.

Why Russia and China did not support the UN draft Resolution on Syria
http://www.rusemb.org.uk/press/250
07.10.2011

1. The project was of a one-sided nature and was aimed solely at putting pressure upon the Syrian authorities, turning a blind eye on unacceptable actions of armed militants within the ranks of the Syrian opposition.

2. The authors of the resolution did not go halfway to meet our demands to include clauses on the unacceptability of external military intervention into Syrian affairs, thus confirming the suspicions that such a possibility is not being ruled out by them.

3. Following the Libyan experience that has been declared "a model" for future operations by the NATO countries within the framework of the "responsibility to protect", Russia and China are against legitimization of unilateral plans to overthrow undesirable regimes through the UN Security Council.

4. The adoption of a resolution would have had negative and unpredictable consequences for the Middle East and Middle East settlement.

5. We are ready for development of such a concept of the Syrian crisis settlement that would in fact promote the start of a national dialogue and the acceleration of the reform processes in the country.

Speaking on 7 October 2011 at a meeting with Russia's national Security Council members, President Dmitry Medvedev said:

Of course Russia wants an end to the bloodshed in Syria no less than any other country. We are using our channels to engage the Syrian leadership actively, calling on them to undertake the adequate changes. If the Syrian leadership proves incapable of carrying out these changes it will have to go, however, this decision is not for NATO or any individual European country to make, but belongs to the Syrian people and Syrian leadership, who have to realise their responsibility for their country's future.

Who needs new provocations for Syria?
http://english.ruvr.ru/2011/10/07/58335581.html
Garibov Konstantin
Oct 7, 2011 15:52 Moscow Time

Damascus on Thursday rejected allegations that President Bashar Assad threatened to attack Israel and the U.S. fleet in the Persian Gulf. What definitely seems to be a propaganda hoax was launched on Tuesday just hours before the UN Security met to vote on sanctions against Syria. Although the sanctions failed to get through, it seems that the provocative resource of the above hoax that was circulated by the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars is far from exhausted. Fars alleged that Bashar Assad had told Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu that in case the West interfered in Syria's internal affairs, Israel would come under joint rocket strikes by Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon, while Iran would assault U.S. warships in the Gulf.

The hoax was actually meant to persuade the UN Security Council to clamp down on Syria by passing a resolution justifying outside interference in Syrian affairs and targeting the subsequent ouster of the Bashar Assad regime. But those plans were dashed after Russia and China vetoed the draft, making clear they do not want a Libyan scenario in Syria.

The last time Russia and China used their right of veto was in the summer of 2008 when they blocked sanctions against Zimbabwe, and in 2007 they teamed up to veto a resolution on Myanmar. This time again, Moscow and Beijing hoped until the last moment that the draft would be amended, but unfortunately this was not the case. The disappointment was great. The veto will not stop us, Paris warned. Washington demanded explanations from Russia, prompting speculation about the worst diplomatic conflict between Russia and the West in years. Analysts are trying to guess what will happen next. Yevgeny Satanovsky, director of the Institute for Middle East and Israeli Studies, gives his view:

"There is nothing impossible even if the UN resolution was not passed. A strike against Syria may be carried out the way it was carried out against Iran. But this will create certain difficulties for Paris and Washington, the top initiators behind all that is happening around Syria, and of course we should not forget about Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey - certain difficulties, to say the least, because there is only one year to go before presidential elections. Both Obama and Sarkozy will have to hold themselves to account before voters. Why do the United States and France need another war, now in Syria, in addition to Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya? That's a big question to which there is still no answer."

Analysts do not rule out that in order to save their face after the failure of the anti-Syrian resolution, the United States and he European Union might announce new unilateral sanctions against Damascus, while simultaneously supplying more arms to the Syrian opposition. They will wait till those arms begin to fire and then they will threaten Bashar Assad with yet another ultimatum, for example, pin-point cleansings, if the regime backfires by using force against force.

Sergei Demidenko of the Institute for Strategic Assessments and Analysis, believes the latter scenario is unlikely.

"Western states cannot change their attitude toward Syria due to their ideological positions. They have already announced that Bashar Assad carries out repressions and that he must be punished. But Russia and China disagree. I think that there will be a good deal of rattle, threats, attempts to create a semblance of a tough anti-Assad stance. But I don't think that this could lead to anything serious, because to topple Bashar Assad now would mean to bring Islamists to power at least in part of Syria. It could be that the West has some strategy of coming to agreement with Islamists, but I doubt that scenario is possible. The Islamists are a very poorly controllable part of the Arab political establishment. A change of regime in Syria will deal a blow to Western interests in the region."

Other analysts say the West will build up pressure on Moscow and Beijing to return to the resolution on Syria and may even agree to soften the wording to avoid a new veto. The latter depends on the success of Syrian reforms and internal political dialogue.

GENEVA, (SANA)_Syria submitted on Friday the national report of periodical comprehensive review at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, who heads the Syrian delegation comprising officials from various official bodies, gave a speech on Syria's achievements in protecting human rights. . .

''Over the past seven months, Syria has witnessed various forms of war threats, not to mention a media war of deception and of blackmail,'' said Mikdad, adding ''Syria, which plays a pivotal role in confronting Western and US hegemony plans, is the target of terrorist threats in which law enforcement members are intended to be depleted and weakened to deflect their attention from the real enemies.''

''Syria will hand the Human Rights Commission in the coming few days a list of martyrs from the law enforcement members counting more than 1,100 martyrs, killed by the armed terrorist groups funded by some neighboring countries which host their extremist leaders.''

''It is strange that these countries hold conferences for the extremists while vaunting about democracy and human rights, with their full knowledge that they are practicing killings and violations of the right to life,'' Mikdad said, adding that the killings coincided with regional and international media instigation.

Mikdad said that there is plenty of proof exposing the lies and fabrications of these channels, citing the story of Zainab al-Hasni. . .

Mikdad stressed the need for annulling the two decisions adopted by the Human Rights Council be annulled, since they were based on baseless claims and misleading, calling for rectifying the work of the Human Rights Council.

''The human rights culture was inflicted with a serious plague as Western countries market it as a cultural product exported to underdeveloped countries,'' said Mikdad.

''Syria's enemies want the culture of death for its people, while the Syrians want a culture of life derived from their noble values and history dating back to 10 thousand years B.C.''

Criticized the French journalist and author of "Trick major" Thierry Meyssan war propaganda by some space stations against Syria through the fabrication of lies, stressing that Al-Jazeera is working to set up studios in the Qatari capital Doha, similar to two names the Abbasids and the Umayyads as it did when the re-production Home Green Square in Tripoli, Bab Azizia against the former presidential palace to delude the people.

The Meyssan in an interview on Syrian TV said yesterday that what is missing in the Arab press is an overview of what is happening they are often dealing with the details but in a world in which the force has a potential massive military decided to invade everything and we should have a clear understanding of how to deal with the United States and Israel with the Arab region. . .

The Meyssan to the people who have cooperated with NATO in its war on Libya did not think that the situation would get complex, but they thought it would be a quick and Gaddafi will fall but what happened was the fall of more than 50 thousand people dead and more than 200 thousand injured and two million people lost their homes do imagine what will happen if NATO launched a war against Syria.

The Meyssan said the United States wanted to do the same thing in Syria, but could not for two reasons that, in order to succeed, there should be, from the beginning, a lot of weapons. . . in Syria did not make it so they are smuggling arms from Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, we find that the armed groups in Syria.

The Meyssan The second reason is that Libya was isolated. . . with the exception of some alliances with some countries on the African continent. . . Syria has a policy of alliances and a very wide, Russia have stopped first attempts to adopt a resolution in the Security Council today and see at a prodigious wielding Russia and China together. . .

the decision to war against Libya had been taken years ago and nothing to do with recent events or the so-called Arab spring. . .

foreigners came with some Libyan militants who took up arms against Gaddafi and they had weapons were not stolen from the warehouses of weapons. . . they have weapons of NATO and American machine guns and weapons of Israel, which underlines that the weapons come from the outside.

The Meyssan that the Libyan intelligence decided to penetrate the e-mail addresses for all journalists gathered at the press center at the Hotel Rixos They found things that do not believe even those who looked as journalists in several places they had contacts with British and American and French intelligence in addition to the Mossad in the sense that they were all spies.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Life became relatively calm on Friday in several areas near the Syrian capital of Damascus, with heavy army and security presence in some suburbs that witnessed massive protests over the past six months.

A heavy security and army presence was noticed at the entrances of some hotspot suburbs near Damascus, including Maadamiyah, Daraya, Harasta and Duma.

In Damascus' central Midan neighborhood, pro- and anti-government protests were seen that only lasted for a couple of minutes.

In Harasta and Duma, which have emerged as hubs of protests, there were about five army check points along the main road that connects Harasta to Duma.

An eye witness in Duma told Xinhua reporter that a small anti-government rally was held there but was dispersed quickly.

Meanwhile, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that an army officer was injured by armed groups in Zamalka area near Damascus, without giving further details.

Al-Jazeera cited activists and witnesses as saying that at least nine people were killed Friday as thousands of people thronged to streets demanding the ouster of President Bashar al- Assad.

The report couldn't be verified as there were no official comments on the civilian toll.

Syria has been wracked by six-month unrest that it blamed on foreign conspiracy and foreign thugs.

Syrian president's political and media adviser Buthayna Shaaban recently put the number of army officers and law-enforcement troops killed since the eruption of protests in Syria in mid March at 800, while a recent UN tally put the number of civilians who were killed at 2,900.

East Saudi Arabia sees more demos
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/202989.html
Wed Oct 5, 2011 11:0PM

The Saudi nationals have once again held demonstrations in the kingdom's east in favor of implementation of political reforms in the absolute monarchy, Press TV reports.

Despite heavy presence of security forces, the protesters took to the streets in the Awamiyah village, the city of Qatif, and Al-Qaddih on Wednesday, calling for an end to Riyadh's crackdown on dissent and demanding the release of political prisoners, a Press TV correspondent reported.

According to Saudi activists, most of the detained political thinkers are being held without trial or legitimate charges and have been arrested for merely 'appearing suspicious.' Some of the detainees are reported to have been held without trial for more than 16 years.

New footage posted on the internet showed Saudi troops being deployed in Awamiyah to crush the protests.

Clashes erupted after the forces opened fire to disperse hundreds of protesters, chanting slogans against Riyadh's policies. Several protesters including women were injured in the confrontations.

Similar rallies have turned violent in the past few days, following attacks by Saudi security forces. A security official speaking on condition of anonymity said an unspecified number of demonstrators had been arrested.

Shaikh Nimr Nimr, a prominent cleric in Awamiyah, has accused Saudi authorities of "provoking" the protesters by firing on them with live bullets and urged the protesters to avoid clashes with the government forces.

He said, "Saudi authorities depend on bullets… and killing and imprisonment. We must depend on the roar of the word, on the words of justice."

A video posted on YouTube dated October 4 showed demonstrators chanting 'Down with Mohammed bin Fahd,' referring to the governor of the Eastern Province -- which has turned into a focal point for anti-regime rallies -- and the son of Saudi Arabia's former ruler, the late King Fahd.

On Monday, the Saudi police arrested two men, both in their 70s, in Awamiyah in an attempt to force their wanted sons, accused of taking part in pro-reform protests, to surrender, one activist said.

The ultraconservative Saudi regime is known for its intolerance of dissent. Earlier in the year, the Saudi Interior Ministry imposed a ban on all kinds of demonstrations and public gatherings.

Human Rights Watch says hundreds of dissidents have been arrested since February as part of the Saudi government's suppression of anti-government protests.

According to the Saudi-based Human Rights First Society (HRFS), the detainees were subjected to physical and mental torture.

The kingdom is also deeply wary of the wave of Islamic Awakening, which has started sweeping the North Africa and the Middle East.

Riyadh especially found pro-democracy protests in neighboring Bahrain, which borders the Eastern Province, a matter to be reckoned with, dispatching its military forces to the island to assist Manama's suppression of demonstrations there.

RIYADH: A Saudi Shiite village where protesters clashed with police was calm Wednesday as a prominent cleric urged his followers to avoid the use of firearms and fingers of blame were pointed at Iran.

"Iran is trying to export its problems to avenge what happened in Bahrain, and reduce pressures on Syria," Tehran's Arab ally, said Anwar Eshki, director of the Saudi-based Middle East Institute for Strategic Studies.

Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of the Dubai-based Gulf Research Center, referred to "concrete evidence of Iran's involvement" in this week's unrest, including "telephone calls from Tehran that were intercepted" by Saudi Arabia.

This is "a message from Iran to Gulf states after its failure in Syria and its loss of a strategic ally. It will respond … and we will begin to see escalation in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province," he said.

Meshal al-Zaidi says he was drawn into Kuwait's protest movement by political ideals, not the economic grievances that helped spur revolts in poorer Arab countries.

"My friend drives a Porsche Cayenne, another a Porsche Panamera, you'll see the best cars at Kuwaiti protests," said al-Zaidi, a 25-year-old who runs a public relations firm and attends rallies seeking the ouster of Prime Minister Shaikh Nasser al-Mohammed al-Sabah. "It's not about money, it's not about oil, it's about real democracy."

Demands for a change of government are growing louder in Kuwait, where per-capita gross domestic product was about $39,000 last year. . .

Youth groups including al-Zaidi's 'September 16' cite inspiration from the Arab Spring and demand a constitutional monarchy and elected government. . .

Kuwaitis call on govt. to quit
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/203000.html
Thu Oct 6, 2011 2:44AM

Thousands of Kuwaitis have held a demonstration in the country's capital, calling for stiff action against the country's corrupt lawmakers and demanding the government to quit.

On Wednesday, the speakers among the roughly 3,000 protesters, who had taken to the streets in Kuwait City, warned that failure to bring the corrupt officials to account could spark bigger demonstrations in the oil-rich emirate, AFP reported.

The protesters also demanded the ouster of the government, which has been led by Prime Minister Shaikh Nasser al-Muhammad Al-Sabah since 2006. The premier is a member of the ruling family and nephew of Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait.

Kuwaiti lawmaker, Khaled al-Sultan, said, "This unprecedented crime will not pass without punishment ... If we do not force this government and its head to step down, the country will go to catastrophe."

The public prosecutor in the emirate has launched a probe into the bank accounts of about 14 MPs, who are accused of receiving illegal deposits of about USD 350 million. Some say as many as 20 lawmakers could eventually be found corrupt in the 50-member parliament.

Some other speakers accused the government of spending the money to buy the votes of lawmakers to ensure the appointment of the prime minister and his cabinet.

An opposition MP, Mussallam al-Barrak, asserted that "we are before an organized gang led by the government and the corrupt MPs."

Another opposition parliamentarian, Jamaan al-Harbash, called Shaikh Nasser's government's continued tenure an insult to the Kuwaiti people.

Kuwaitis have occasionally been holding demonstrations in the emirate since the widespread launch of anti-regime protests in North Africa and Middle East early in the year.

The head of Public Security, Major General Tareq Mubarak bin Daina, turned down the request by Bahrain's main Shiite opposition group Al-Wefaq to organize a "human chain" protest in Manama, BNA state news agency said.

The security chief said the location for the protest, which had been planned to take place outside the offices of Al-Wefaq in Zinj, west of Manama, "is not suitable security-wise." He said the protest "could cause traffic bottlenecks... while it will be difficult for organizers and security bodies to control the human chain, which might affect the safety of participants and those using the road." Bin Daina ordered security measures to ban the event, BNA said.

Al-Wefaq slammed the ban as "illegal" and an "indication of constraints on the freedom of expression," in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

On Monday, a Bahraini special court established to try defendants accused of taking part in a month-long Shiite-led protests slapped jail verdicts ranging between 15 and 25 years on 36 Shiites.

BEIRUT: The number of Arab tourists who drive into Lebanon is down by 90 percent this year after months of political unrest in Syria, the only neighbouring country with an open border into Lebanon, its tourism minister said on Thursday.

Fadi Abboud said: "600,000 Arab tourists normally drive through Syria (into Lebanon) every year ... 90 percent of all overland arrivals have been lost in 2011."

Overland arrivals through Syrian border crossings account for about a quarter of tourist arrivals to Lebanon, which has long promoted itself as a diverse country boasting Roman ruins, limestone caves, ski resorts, beaches and a vibrant night life.

Tourists from the Gulf, Jordan and Iraq usually drive through Syria to get to Lebanon, but the escalation of violence in Syria since anti-government demonstrations began in March has slowed the flow.

Some 2,900 civilians have been killed in Syria in a military crackdown against protesters aiming to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, according to the U.N. human rights office.

The U.N. World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) says tourism revenues in Lebanon were down 20 percent in the first six months of 2011. Tourism accounts for 22 percent of GDP.

Abboud added Western tourists had shied away from the Middle East due to the "Arab spring" unrest.

But he said he believed Lebanon's tourism sector could weather the storm.

"The main percentage of tourists coming to Lebanon are the jet setters and playboys of the Middle East ... who come for the night life and cuisine," he said. "They come into Lebanon through the airport and so they are not affected."

Syriac Christians to get first church in Istanbul

ISTANBUL- Hürriyet Daily News

Turkey’s Syriac Christian community has secured approval from officials for the construction of its first church. The church, planned to be constructed in the Yeşilköy neighborhood, is expected to host 17,000 Syriacs who live in Istanbul
Prominent Syriac community leader, Kenan Altınışık (C) says the construction is set to begin as soon as suitable lands for the new church building are allotted.

Prominent Syriac community leader, Kenan Altınışık (C) says the construction is set to begin as soon as suitable lands for the new church building are allotted.

After years of tussling and hairsplitting, Turkey’s Syriac Christian community has secured approval from both the prime minister and the president for the construction of its first church in the Yeşilköy neighborhood on the European side of Istanbul.

“Half of our community lives in and around Yeşilköy. We rent churches for Sunday rites, but we can only start morning mass at 11:30, whereas we are supposed to finish our Sunday rites before 10:30 in accordance with our tradition,” Kenan Altınışık, a prominent Syriac community leader, told the Hürriyet Daily News via e-mail.

The church site will be allocated to the ancient community by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, while construction expenses will be paid for by the Syriacs. An official from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Hürriyet Daily News that they are searching for a suitable location for the new church.

The church architecture is planned to bear traces of the Syriac’s thousands-of-years-old culture, while the construction is set to begin as soon as suitable lands are allotted.

Community representatives held a series of talks with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President Abdullah Gül and EU Minister Egemen Bağış regarding their problems concerning the new church, including the allocation of land for its construction, Altınışık said.

“Afterward, we also met with the head of the Istanbul Metropolitan Construction Affairs Committee upon a directive issued by the Istanbul metropolitan mayor,” he said, adding they have no communication problems.

“We presented several files to the head of the construction affairs committee and he offered a few places, but they were not suitable for us,” said Altınışık, a businessman and head of the Syriac community’s Foundation for the Church of Mother Mary, which is located in the Tarlabaşı neighborhood in central Istanbul.

The community holds the title deed to the Church of Mother Mary and the metropolitan center that houses it, Altınışık said, adding that about 17,000 Syriacs live in Istanbul with scant numbers still living in the southeast as well.

A metropolitan center acts as a higher institution for an orthodox church. Many of Turkey’s Syriacs migrated to Europe during the mid-1980s, when there was political turmoil in the southeast.

Foreign Ministry Refutes Alleged Meeting between President al-Assad and Davutoglu
http://www.sana.sy/eng/337/2011/10/06/373877.htm
Oct 06, 2011

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - An official source at the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs denied what has been said by some mass media on information about a meeting they claimed that it has been recently held between President Bashar al-Assad and Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmed Davutoglu, stressing that what has been published about this alleged meeting is untrue.

In a statement to SANA, the source indicated that the last meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister was held last August and no messages were conveyed from or to anyone during the meeting.

The source added that the fabrication and misleading by some media bodies, which reflect the hugeness and fierceness of the aggressive campaign launched against Syria, will not succeed in affecting the rightness and wisdom of the Syrian stances.

Syria lifts ban on imports but troubles continue for Turkish firms
http://www.todayszaman.com/news-258991-syria-lifts-ban-on-imports-but-troubles-continue-for-turkish-firms.html
05 October 2011, Wednesday / NOAH BLASER , İSTANBUL

Syrian officials on Tuesday announced the lifting of a two-week import ban, reversing a decision that barred imports from Turkey and other trading partners who had become critical of Syria's regime.

The ban, which was originally designed to conserve the country's foreign currency reserves in the face of internal turmoil, was abandoned by the regime of Bashar al-Assad after spiking and evoking ire from Syria's merchant class. The lifting of the ban is likely to be only a brief respite for businesses both in Turkey and Syria, who have suffered from Syria's political instability and now face the likelihood of Turkish and European sanctions against the Syrian regime.

"In the past years, we enjoyed serious increases in bilateral trade and tourism," said Cahit Erbalcı, chairman of the Federation of Gaziantep Industrialists and Businessmen (GـNSAİF), told Today's Zaman on Wednesday. Now, says Erbalcı, trade has "greatly suffered" in the wake of worsening violence and instability in Syria.

Turkish-Syrian trade rose dramatically from a modest $820 million in 2005 to roughly $2.5 billion in 2010, but this year Turkish exports to Syria have failed to top $1.2 billion. Erbalcı says a broad range of industries have been impacted by Assad's crackdown against dissenters, commenting that instability has greatly complicated cross-border logistics. "We have not seen any Syrian companies unable to pay their bills; however, it is hard to do business in Syria because most often companies can only contact each other on the Internet," the chairman stated.

Erbalcı says that communications difficulties have been just one problem for the regional tourism trade, which often shuttles visitors between Turkish and Syrian border cities. Ever since al-Assad began his campaign to violently quell opposition, Erbalcı says, "cross-border tourism has been affected more than any other industry. It has almost reached zero."

Now, faced with the likelihood of comprehensive sanctions imposed by both Turkey and European nations, Erbalcı says the worst fear of regional businessmen is that the border between Syria and Turkey might be closed. "The land transport from Syria connects Turkey to the whole of the Middle East," Erbalcı stated. If the border is closed to trade, the chairman believes it could seriously disrupt Turkey's burgeoning eastern trade. Fortunately, Balcı added, "the closure of the border is unlikely."

Cross-border trade is nonetheless likely to continue to suffer in the coming months, with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announcing on Tuesday his intentions to go ahead with unilateral sanctions against Assad's regime. Erdoğan's announcement followed the veto of a UN plan to impose sanctions in the Security Council earlier in the day, and the prime minister, stating that "it is not possible for us to remain silent on this issue," told reporters at a press conference in South Africa that Turkey and other countries would impose sanctions despite the veto. Sanctions are likely to cause further damage to an already reeling Syrian economy, which is currently suffering from an EU and American embargo on the Syrian oil industry.

As political tensions between Turkey and its southern neighbor increase, Balcı believes that the economic situation will likely continue on its current downward course. "It will take some time before we maintain the figures reached prior to the latest political crisis," he stated.

Turkey starts drills near Syria border

The Turkish military has launched planned military exercises in the southern province of Hatay, near the border with Syria, as tensions remain high between Ankara and Damascus.

The eight-day drills began on Wednesday and will test the army's mobilization system and the communication between public institutions and the armed forces in case of any mobilization or war.

Forty military vehicles and 730 stand-by personnel will participate in the exercise, codenamed Yildirim (Lightning)-2011.

The Turkish military has described the drills as routine but analysts believe the move is intended to increase pressure on neighboring Syria.

Relations between Syria and Turkey saw unprecedented strains since unrest erupted in the Arab nation in mid-March.

Meanwhile, Turkey has halted its arms deals with Syria.

Turkey is also preparing sanctions against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over what it calls the crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Syria insists that the unrest has been largely orchestrated by elements that are well-paid and armed by foreign powers and some neighboring states, including Turkey, as well as the Israeli regime.

Syria state TV has also broadcast reports and images of arms caches seized from armed gangs and confessions by terrorists that elaborated on how they obtained weapons from foreign sources.

"We hope the crisis in Syria is coming to an end… President Bashar al-Assad is working day and night to end the crisis," Patriarch Hazim said during a meeting with the Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdul-Kareem.

Abdul-Kareem, for his part, said that he discussed with the Patriarch issues that concern the Arab nation, expressing happiness over the optimistic vision of Mr. Hazim.

On Syrian military vehicles' penetration of the Lebanese lands, the Syrian Ambassador underlined that both countries respect sovereignty of each other, adding "no need for exaggerating events by some sides."

IVKOURA, Lebanon: Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim said Wednesday that there is no fear for Christians living in Lebanon and Syria but only of forces "working to destroy us."

Following a meeting with a Hezbollah delegation at the patriarchate in Balamand, Hazim said "I refuse that there be fear for Christians.

We are present in Lebanon and Syria, and we have no fear for Christians; we only fear when there are forces working on destroying us."

Hazim added that Christians will remain in Syria and will coexist with everyone as they are no strangers to the region.

Ghaleb Abu Zeinab, a member of Hezbollah's political bureau, described the meeting as a good opportunity to discuss national issues.

露中 第三次世界大戦阻止に向けて

Markov: President al-Assad's Policy Defends Rights of all Spectrums of Syrian Society

Oct 06, 2011

MOSCOW, (SANA) – Deputy of Russian Duma Council and Director of Political Research Institute in Moscow Sergey Markov said that President Bashar al-Assad's policy defends the rights of all spectrums of the Syrian society which strongly support this policy.

Markov warned that the Syrian Opposition, which includes many of al-Qaeda supporters, will commit acts of harassment against the Syrian people the moment it came into power as dictatorship seems so clear in its acts, adding that the US seeks to sow religious and racial conflict in Syria.

Markov considered Russia and China's veto of a UNSC draft resolution against Syria as a serious failure of the US regarding the situation in Syria.

He added that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's statements on that Moscow and Beijing should explain why they vetoed a UNSC draft resolution on Syria indicate the great failure of Washington diplomacy.

(Reuters) - The European Union is set next week to consider blacklisting the Syrian central bank as well as imposing sanctions against more Iranian individuals, according to sources on Wednesday familiar with the situation.

A decision to impose sanctions on the Syrian central bank had been taken in principle, and would be presented to an EU foreign affairs committee on Monday, said a person familiar with the situation.

A written procedure for adoption could then follow, possibly in a week or so, the source said.

US ambassador in Lebanon demands protection for Syrian opposers
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/202991.html
Wed Oct 5, 2011 11:7PM
Altaf Ahmed, Press TV, Beirut

In a meeting with Lebanese Defense Minister, "Fayez Ghosn", US ambassador to Lebanon "Maura Connelly" emphasized the US's expectations of the Lebanese government and its Armed Forces in implementing, quote, "The International Legal Obligations" of protecting members of the Syrian opposition residing in Lebanon, as well as supporting and funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

Lebanese officials, including MP "Fayez Ghosn", contradicted "Connelly's" points of view, viewing this as one of many Washington's blunt interferences in Lebanon's internal policies.

Observers and experts read Connelly's demands as an extension to her administration's sanctions meant to prolong unrest in Syria and weaken and limit the influence of its allies in the Middle East.

Moreover, officials have stressed that Connelly's demands come at a time when her country's military and intelligence cooperation in Syria proved to be sporadic and limited, and thus she is on a search for channels of influence in order to preserve US interests in the region.

Due to profound relations and security accords that bond the sister states of Lebanon and Syria, Lebanese officials have assured that the country will never become a conspirator against Syria; that which they believe only the US and Israel can benefit from.

BERLIN: Germany has summoned the Syrian ambassador to Berlin over a tirade by Damascus's envoy to the United Nations, the foreign ministry said in a statement here Thursday.

"At the meeting, the verbal attack by the Syrian UN ambassador was rejected in the strongest terms," it added.

Jaafari said those seeking action against Syria were "our enemies" and had no "humanitarian motive".

The meeting ended in acrimony with US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice leading her delegation out after Jaafari said the United States was linked to "genocide".

And German daily Bild reported Tuesday that Jaafari had also singled out Berlin for a bitter rebuke.

"Germany, which persecuted the Jews in Europe, is trying to play the honest broker for a mendacious and fraudulent resolution," he was quoted as saying.

The foreign ministry said the Syrian ambassador to Germany had also been told that "spying on and intimidating Syrian opposition members in Germany is in no way acceptable."

Al-Husni Story Uncovers Lies of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch
http://www.sana.sy/eng/22/2011/10/06/373995.htm
Oct 06, 2011

CAPITALS, (SANA) – The story of Zainab al-Husni and the reaction of some international organizations which hold the mottos of "Human Rights", including the Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have uncovered the reality of such organizations and their relationship with the Western countries and their schemes in the region.

The organizations considered the interview the Syrian TV held with Zainab al-Husni as needing more inspection because the situation is unclear; however, when they believed the fabricated story of Zainab broadcast by some instigative channels, they did not make sure of its correctness.

Zainab al-Husni appeared through the Syrian TV safe and sound after some TV channels reported she was mutilated and tortured to death before she was given to her family.

The Human Rights Watch phoned the family of al-Husni to make sure that the girl who appeared in the report broadcast by the Syrian TV was their daughter.

The family confirmed the girl was their daughter; however the organization only issued a statement to say it was "deceived" but they did not apologize for Zainab and her family.

The way TV channels and international organizations dealt with the Syrian TV interview proves the magnitude of conspiracy being orchestrated against Syria to affect its image and reputation at the international, Arab and local public opinion.

Syria: Assad family 'selling off overseas property empire'
A multimillion pound property empire that includes flats and houses in London is being sold off and turned into hard cash by members of Syria's Assad family, it has been reported.

Properties include a £10 million town house in Mayfair bought by Rifaat al-Assad, the so-called 'Butcher of Hama', who is accused of leading a massacre of up to 40,000 people 30 years ago.

His nephew, Bashar al-Assad, is currently leading a ruthless and bloody campaign against pro-democracy campaigners. The UN human rights office on Thursday raised the tally of people killed during seven months of unrest to more than 2,900.

The selling off of the property suggests the Assads are liquidating their assets in the chance the regime is forced from power in Syria.

London property belonging to toppled dictators Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia, was seized soon after they fell.

According to the French satirical and current affairs magazine Charlie Hebdo, Rifaat, Bashar al-Assad's uncle, "has sold off his huge property portfolio in the United States, London, Spain and France", with the clan wanting to "liquidate their oversease homes as quickly as possible". The liquidation of the properties was reportedly being carried out by two of Rifaat's four wives, as well as his children.

The magazine, which has obtained official bank documents confirming the transactions, says that two "huge lots" belonging to the Assads in Puerto Banus, the marina town on Spain's Costa del Sol, are on the market for up to £600 million.

Even this figure has been discounted by many millions, suggesting that the Assads are eager to get rid of their property as quickly as possible.

Rifaat al-Assad, 73 and the former vice president of Syria, moved into a Georgian mansion off Park Lane in 2009.

Although he has never been indicted by an international court for the Hama massacre in 1982, there are numerous independent accounts of his alleged involvement. Rifaat, who spends most of his time living in France nowadays, denies the claims. He was unavailable for comment.

Asma al-Assad, the wife of Bashar al-Assad, is a UK passport holder who was born and raised in London, where her parents still live, and where she still owns homes.
