RIYADH — Saudi men were voting in municipal elections on Thursday, with a poor turnout in the last all-male polls in the kingdom after King Abdullah this week gave women the right to participate in four years' time.
Some 5,324 candidates are competing for 1,056 seats -- in only the second elections in Saudi Arabian history -- to fill half the seats in the country's 285 councils. The other half are appointed by the government.
The first elections in the Gulf kingdom, which has a population of around 27.5 million, including around 19 million Saudis, were held in 2005, but the government extended the existing council's term for two years.
Around 1.2 million male voters have registered to take part.
But the polls appeared to attract little interest on the first day of the Saudi weekend on Thursday and Friday.
Just a few voters had shown up before midday at a polling station in Al-Olaya neighbourhood in central Riyadh, an AFP correspondent reported.
"The movement is slow before noon. People are still asleep because it is a day off," said candidate Abdulwahab al-Maliki.
At another voting centre at Al-Farazdaq primary school election supervisors waited for voters, but very few turned up.
"I am confused. I don't who I should vote for. Candidates have used Facebook to communicate with us. I prefer direct contact," lamented Mohammed Abdullah, saying: "I don't think I will give my vote to any of them."
Voting was also slow in the country's economic capital, the port city of Jeddah on the west coast.
"I voted for a colleague of mine," said retired teacher Ibrahim Ghazi, adding that he "didn't check any of the manifestos of the candidates and didn't know other names."
The results of the vote are expected on Sunday.
Thursday's polling comes just four days after absolute monarch King Abdullah granted women the right to vote and run in the next municipal elections in four years, a historic first for the ultra-conservative country.
Women's rights activists had long fought for the right to vote in Saudi Arabia, which applies a strict version of Sunni Islam and bars women from driving or travelling without the consent of a male guardian.
In addition to women participating in the only public polls in the country, King Abdullah also announced he had decided to admit women to the Shura Council, an all-appointed consultative body.
Saudi Arabia does not have an elected parliament.
The monarch's move was hailed by the United States and Britain, with both calling it a significant "step forward."
But the moves were also seen by some as insufficient.
Hussein Sharif, head of the human rights association in the western city of Mecca, said: "Women still have a long way to go" to gain their rights.
And Fahad Al-Harithi, head of Asbar Centre for Studies, Research and Communications, said: "The road for women to gain their rights is still too long. She is still marginalised... in terms of her rights and duties."
Advocacy group Human Rights Watch also welcomed the king's decision but said it came too late.
"King Abdullah's promise that women will finally be allowed to vote is a welcome move away from the discrimination and exclusion that Saudi women have suffered for so long," said Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW's Middle East director.
"Sadly, King Abdullah's promise of reform in 2015 doesn't come soon enough for women to vote in upcoming municipal elections," Whitson said of Thursday's vote.
Amnesty International cautiously welcomed the decision but said the kingdom was moving much too slowly on women's rights.
"It is a welcome, albeit limited, step along the long road towards gender equality in Saudi Arabia," said Philip Luther, Amnesty's deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa.
"It is, however, much overdue and does not go nearly far enough."

Turkey threatened on Friday to retaliate against Syria for its decision to impose a sweeping import ban, in a further sign of fraying ties between the two neighbours over Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's bloody crackdown on protesters.
As Western nations broaden sanctions against Syria's ruling elite and protests disrupt the economy, Damascus last week slapped a ban on all imports except grain, raw materials and 51 essential items, to preserve its dwindling foreign reserves.
Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan said he hoped Syria changed its practice as soon as possible and warned that Turkey, Syria's largest trading partner, might decide to target Syria's exports.
"Syria is exporting a significant amount to Turkey. We are not creating obstacles to Syria's exports to Turkey, which amount to $700-800 million annually. But I want to reiterate that if they impose an obstacle to Turkish goods, Turkey will do the same," Çağlayan told reporters in the city of Mersin.
"Turkey, a country with $300 billion trade volume, will be largely unaffected by this. But the possible burden Syria will have to bear will turn the Syrian economy upside down."
Once warm ties between Turkey and Syria are near breaking point over Assad's repression of anti-government protests.
Turkey is preparing a list of sanctions against Damascus after failing to persuade Assad to end violence and implement democratic reforms.
Food and consumer goods prices are rising sharply in Syria, adding to the woes of Syrians who have seen hundreds of their countrymen killed in a crackdown the United Nations says has killed about 2,700 people.
The head of the Turkish Exporters Association, Mehmet Büyükekşi, said the situation in Syria was critical and that violence was "significantly" damaging the Syrian economy.
"Their tourism revenues are next to zero, export revenues are on a freefall, and the forex reserves of the government are running out," Büyükekşi said in a statement.
"Media reports cause a misperception of the issue. This decision impacts imports from not only Turkey but all countries, including Arab states," he said, referring to reports Syria was singling out Turkish goods.
Bilateral trade between Turkey and Syria was worth $2.5 billion in 2010, and investments by Turkish firms in Syria reached $260 million.

BEIRUT, (SANA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, stressed that Syria is a pivotal country in the region that is surrounded by challenges and crises, adding that Syria can overcome the crisis through reforms because stability in Syria based on reforms is the best way.
In an interview with al-Manar TV channel on Thursday, al-Maliki said Iraq, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan are subject to situations similar to that of Syria.
On international stances, al-Maliki stressed that there are long-delayed schemes in the region and it seems that the time has come to implement them, pointing out that the Sykes-Picot agreement divided the Arabs into states and the "Arab spring" will divide those states into smaller ones so that Israel remains the only effective side in the region.

Russia is sending its northern fleet led by the country's only aircraft carrier, the "Admiral Kuznetsov," to the Mediterranean Sea for exercises, daily Hürriyet reported on its website Thursday.
The Kuznetsov will sail the waters in the Barents Sea for a week and carry out drills there first, the report said.
The carrier will then start a three-month voyage to the Mediterranean Sea via the Northeast Atlantic. It will be joined by anti-submarine ship "Admiral Chabanenko" and other vessels.
It was not yet decided which ports the ships would visit but it was possible that the fleet could take part in military exercises with fleets of other countries in the region while it is in the Mediterranean.
The last time the Admiral Kuznetsov sailed in Mediterranean waters was in the winter of 2008-2009, when it visited ports in Turkey and Syria.

Russia is sending its northern fleet led by the country's only aircraft carrier, the "Admiral Kuznetsov," to the Mediterranean Sea for exercises, daily Hürriyet reported on its website Thursday.

DAMASCUS, (SANA)-An official military spokesman on Thursday denied reports by some TV stations that warplanes have raided al-Rastan, stressing that these reports are baseless and untrue.
"Law Enforcement forces, backed by army units confronted the armed terrorist groups who had terrified citizens in al-Rastan, crippled life circle in the city, sabotaged private and public properties and killed civilians as well as blocked roads with explosives and roadblocks," the spokesman said.
He added "in a specific operation, the Army units have successfully fulfilled their duties, arresting a number of the armed groups' members, seizing their weapons, explosives and different ammunitions."
The spokesman said clashes have led to the martyrdom of seven Army and law-enforcement members, including two officers, wounding 32 others among them 7 officers, adding" the army members are pursuing the terrorist groups to restore security and stability to al-Rastan and its citizens,"
The fabricated news of warplanes come in the framework of a series of false news which some TV stations, particularly al-Jazeera, deliberately broadcast before Friday, hoping to achieve projects that call for foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs.

PROVINCES, (SANA)-Three members of a military engineering unit were martyred, 2 others were injured, when they were trying to dismantle an explosive device in Douma, Damascus Countryside.
A Police source told SANA correspondent that the explosive device, planted in a place expected to witness a turnout of protesters following Friday Prayers, suddenly blasted which caused the death of the three martyrs.
The source said that the competent authorities immediately summoned a military engineering unit to dismantle the explosive device before the prayers leave the mosques, which was placed in an iron tube and aimed to kill the largest number of citizens in Douma city.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Barakat Mohamad Matir and Mwafaq Muhammad al-Jasem from Hama recounted how terrorist Abdel Hadi Ad-Dalla opened fire at protesters in Homs from a white Hyundai car to film the event and send the footage to al-Jazeera channel to accuse security forces of committing it.
In his confessions broadcast by the Syrian TV on Thursday, Matir said that the gunmen appeared in the video broadcast by the Syrian TV opening fire at protesters near al-Fairouza traffic signal in Homs are Firas al-Batesh, Abdel Hadi al-Dalla and his brother-in-law Mwafaq al-Jasem.
He added that he was arrested as he is the owner of the car seized at a checkpoint near al-Rastan while transporting weapons, indicating that one of his relatives Naser al-Jayez and someone called Sultan al-Ahmad borrowed the car.
For his part, Mwafaq al-Jasem said that he participated in protests that call for reforms in al-Asheera neighborhood.

Al-Jasem said some masked gunmen provoked children and youth to set up barricades on the roads claiming that the security forces will enter the neighborhoods and open fire at the inhabitants.
He narrated what he repeatedly heard from some gunmen who claimed to protect protesters that they themselves participated in protests, opened fire at protesters or sent some of them to do so as to accuse the security of committing their crimes.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Barakat Mohamad Matir and Mwafaq Muhammad al-Jasem from Hama recounted how terrorist Abdel Hadi Ad-Dalla opened fire at protesters in Homs from a white Hyundai car to film the event and send the footage to al-Jazeera channel to accuse security forces of committing it.
In his confessions broadcast by the Syrian TV on Thursday, Matir said that the gunmen appeared in the video broadcast by the Syrian TV opening fire at protesters near al-Fairouza traffic signal in Homs are Firas al-Batesh, Abdel Hadi al-Dalla and his brother-in-law Mwafaq al-Jasem.
He added that he was arrested as he is the owner of the car seized at a checkpoint near al-Rastan while transporting weapons, indicating that one of his relatives Naser al-Jayez and someone called Sultan al-Ahmad borrowed the car.
For his part, Mwafaq al-Jasem said that he participated in protests that call for reforms in al-Asheera neighborhood.
He confessed that Abdel Hadi opened fire at protesters and homes randomly from a white Sonata Hyundai car.
Al-Jasem said some masked gunmen provoked children and youth to set up barricades on the roads claiming that the security forces will enter the neighborhoods and open fire at the inhabitants.
He narrated what he repeatedly heard from some gunmen who claimed to protect protesters that they themselves participated in protests, opened fire at protesters or sent some of them to do so as to accuse the security of committing their crimes.
Over 4 months, they continued to instigate protests, destroy streets and electricity power stations to deceive people and convince them that the security forces will storm their homes, he said.
Al-Jasem said that Sheikh Yousef provoked prayers in al-Refaei Mosque to participate in protests claiming that the state is killing people and at night he carries a gun in the streets side by side with the armed groups.
He recognized Firas al-Batesh, Maher al-Na'es and Abdel Hadi al-Dalla cousin and some of al-Asheera inhabitants while watching videos about gunmen opening fire at the citizens broadcast by the Syrian TV.

Egypt is being considered for incorporation into the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC).
Discussions are under way about making Egypt a GCC member, the Kuwaiti al-Watan newspaper reported Gulf sources as saying.
The sources also said that the GCC states are enthusiastic about Egypt joining, as the country has the capabilities and shares mutual strategic interests with the Gulf states. Egypt's security historically has also been linked to the security of the Gulf, they added.
Egypt and Morocco are the only Arab economies classified as emerging markets, and Egypt boasts the biggest army in the Arab world.
In addition, Egypt and the GCC states have strong mutual interests.
On September 11, Morocco and Jordan attended their first GCC ministerial meeting, in Jeddah.
The sources said that an Egyptian role is increasingly necessary to the stability of the region, especially after the change of regime in Iraq and the increasing Iranian interference in the Iraqi political sphere.
Meanwhile, sources said that the close ties of Tehran and Cairo is not a problem, because the Gulf States are convinced that any ties connecting Egypt and Iran will benefit the region as a whole.
Egyptian officials welcomed the news.
Last week, Egypt's deputy prime minister, Hazem al-Beblawi, said Arab governments or their investment arms may soon buy Egyptian treasury bills to help the Cairo government reduce its borrowing costs.
Beblawi specifically mentioned Saudi Arabai and the UAE when discussing the treasury bills.
The GCC's six member-states include: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reportedly offered his help to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad to help him manage an uprising that rocked Turkey's southern neighbor for months if Syria's president allows Muslim Brotherhood to take up at least one fourth of the cabinet.
"In June, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered, if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ensured between a quarter and a third of ministers in his government were members of the Muslim Brotherhood, to make a commitment to use all his influence to end the rebellion," a Western diplomat said, AFP news agency reported on Thursday.
"The head of the Syrian state refused such a proposal," the diplomat added.
According to AFP, another European diplomat also confirmed that Turkey made the request to Assad in exchange of giving four major ministries to Muslim Brotherhood, the banned movement in Syria for decades.
"The Turks proposed at first that the Muslim Brotherhood occupy four major ministries and explained that they are part of the political components of this country," the diplomat said, according to AFP.
The report said that Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu delivered a written letter to Assad from Turkish President Abdullah Gül. Turkey's state-run Anatolia news agency unveiled the letter, which included no such a request.
During Davutoğlu's marathon talks in Damascus earlier last month, Turkish foreign minister called for the return of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, a Syrian official with knowledge of the talks said.
"President Assad told him that as individuals they could certainly come back and enjoy Syrian nationality, but never as a party, because they have a religious foundation which is incompatible with Syria's secular character."
According to human rights advocates, there are currently thousands of Syrians serving in prisons for decades accused of being affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Erdoğan, in an interview with Time magazine in New York, said Assad earlier told him that he had liberated most of the political offenders. "Assad told me 'we only have about 83 political offenders in prison.' But actually there are thousands and thousands. Those individuals have never been involved in violent attacks or uprisings," Erdoğan said, adding that they've been unfortunately incarcerated based on their faith or their expressions.
The report said Turkish Foreign Ministry official didn't confirm the claims and said "this is the first I have heard of that, but we have always said (to Syria) that if you do not share power through elections, and if you do not make reforms ... things will become difficult for you."
Erdoğan's chief foreign policy adviser İbrahim Kalın dismissed the allegations through his Twitter feed as "absolutely false, fabricated."

Arab country's main aim is to send a political message to the Syrian regime after its violent crackdown on unarmed protesters. Egyptian and Syrian actors are the most divided over the issue.
Syrian actress Raghda earlier announced her full support of the Syrian regime and accused the revolutionist of having a foreign agenda.

QUESTION: Yeah. Could you update us on the activities of Ambassador Ford and what is the situation there?
MR. TONER: I don't have an update on Ambassador Ford's whereabouts or his activities. I do – sorry about it. I mean, I don't have – I don't know what his most recent activities have been. He obviously remains engaged on the ground. I don't know that he's traveled recently. We'll try to get you an update on that.
In general terms, we've seen continued oppression by the Syrian Government, including credible reports that Syrian intelligence services are imprisoning and torturing and killing relatives of dissidents inside Syria as a means of forcing activists to give themselves up. We've seen increased violence over the weekend in other parts of Syria, and we just reiterate our call for the Syrian Government to stop the violence.
QUESTION: Okay. There has been reports that Jandali is an American Syrian musician and his parents were smuggled out of Syria, that this was done in coordination with the American Embassy. Do you have any more information on that?
MR. TONER: I'm aware of the individual, I'm aware of the case. I don't know that I can comment beyond that, no.
QUESTION: And lastly, there has been reports that (inaudible), volatile times ahead with a grouped – military groups congregating outside the Syrian army. Do you have any comment on that?

QUESTION: There is apparently some arms being sent to the opposition and a group that –people that have defected from the army, members of the armed forces have formed their own units. Would you, at this point, give them aid?

QUESTION: A lot of your expressions of support for the opposition have been grounded in part on the fact that they have been nonviolent and peaceful. Are you saying that you would continue to support them if they actively took up arms and essentially became an armed insurrection that you would – they would receive the full backing from you? If the movement loses its nonviolent character, does that change, in any way, U.S. support for its goal?
MR. TONER: I think what remains unchanged is that Asad is no longer the legitimate leader of that country. He, by using violence against his people, has created the present situation. These are unarmed protestors. They remain unarmed, for the large part. But the dynamic is changing because – due to this continued violence by Asad and his regime.
So the responsibility, the onus, is on Asad. We're calling for him to step down so that a democratic transition can take place. That's what our focus is.
QUESTION: But what's your reaction to reports that elements in the military are defecting and threatening to use force against the regime?

Wouldn't it be, in fact, in the interest of the United States to caution against the use of violence on the premise that this will engender U.S. aid?

TONER: Well, I think from our understanding, the vast majority of the Syrian people are adamant that they don't want any kind of military intervention, and this does remain a largely peaceful opposition movement. DAMASCUS, (SANA) - An official source at the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs said the recent statements made by American officials including what was said by Spokesman of the US Department of State Mark Toner on Sep 26th about supporting the armed terrorist groups in using violence against the Syrian Arab Army, clearly indicate that the US is involved in encouraging the armed groups to carry out acts of violence against the Syrian Army.
In a statement to SANA, the source added that describing the terrorist acts as normal by the Deputy of the US Department of State Spokesman is an irresponsible attitude that would encourage the acts of violence and sabotage serving the foreign agendas which contradict with the interests of the Syrian people.
The source said that Syria strongly condemns these American statements, and affirms determination to perform its duty in preserving its security and stability, defending its citizens, and in confronting all the attempts of interference in its internal affairs.

Supporters of President Bashar Assad pelted the U.S. ambassador to Syria with eggs and tomatoes Thursday as he entered an office for a meeting with a leading opposition figure and then tried to storm the building in the capital Damascus, the opposition activist said.
Ambassador Robert Ford, an outspoken critic of Assad's crackdown on the 6-month-old anti-government uprising, was trapped in the office for about three hours until Syria security forces showed up and escorted him out.
An official at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus later told CBS News that Ford was "safe and unharmed" following the attack. The embassy provided no further information about what happened, saying a statement would likely be issued by the State Department in Washington later in the day.
Ford came under attack as he arrived for a meeting with Hassan Abdul-Azim, who heads the outlawed Arab Socialist Democratic Union party.
"Now that security forces are here, I believe his life is not in danger," Abdul-Azim told The Associated Press.
Ford has angered the Syrian regime in past months by visiting a couple of the protest centers outside of Damascus in a show of solidarity with the anti-government uprising. The latest incident could further raise tensions between Washington and Damascus, which has accused the United States of helping incite violence in Syria. In August, President Barack Obama demanded Assad resign, saying he had lost his legitimacy as a ruler.
Abdul-Azim said Ford was inside his office when the Assad supporters tried to force their way in, breaking some door locks. Office staff prevented them from rushing in, but the ambassador was trapped inside for about three hours with some 100 hostile pro-government protesters outside.
Abdul-Azim said Syrian security arrived about an hour after the attack began.
The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment on the confrontation.
The attack on Ford came five days after government supporters threw eggs and stones at France's ambassador as he left a meeting in Damascus with a Greek Orthodox patriarch. Ambassador Eric Chevallier was unharmed.
Tension between the West and Syria — Iran's closest Arab ally — have been rising for months.
Washington and the European Union have imposed sanctions on some Syrian officials, including Assad, because of Assad's crackdown that has left some 2,700 people, according to the United Nations.
A trip in July by the U.S. and French ambassadors to the central city of Hama to express support for protesters drew swift condemnation from the Syrian government, which said the unauthorized visits were proof that Washington was inciting violence in the Arab nation. Authorities then warned both ambassadors not to travel outside the capital without permission.
A month later, the Obama administration brushed off a complaint by Syrian authorities that Ford violated their travel rules by leaving Damascus without permission. The Syrian foreign ministry registered concern over Ford's trip in August from Damascus to the southern village of Jassem, where he met opposition activists.
Last month, Ford and several other ambassadors expressed their condolences to the family of a rights advocate who was killed.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - " The US Embassy informed the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Thursday morning that the US Ambassador Robert Ford, was faced by some Syrians who gathered to protest his presence and movements while visiting lawyer Hassan Abdel Azim at his office," an official source at Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said.
The source added that in order to meet Syria's international obligations, the Ministry contacted the competent authorities to take necessary procedures to protect the Ambassador and ensure his safe return to the Embassy headquarters as soon as it knew about the issue.
Hundreds of Syrian citizens gathered in front of lawyer Abdel Azim's office at al-Nasr Street in Damascus in protest of the US Ambassador's movements.
The participants chanted slogans that express their rejection of the foreign interference in Syria's internal affairs and the US policy.

Issued a U.S. Treasury Department two days before the licenses considered exceptions to the sanctions imposed on Syria recently.
The "Economist" that the new exceptions (or the so-called license) included two parts:
The first license:
Allow non-governmental organizations to issue and re-export services to Syria to be able to perform the following activities:
- Activities to support humanitarian projects, including but not limited to: the fight against drought, helping refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of conflicts, the distribution of food and medicines, and serve the health services.
- Activities to support democracy-building in Syria, including but not limited to, the rule of law, citizen participation, government accountability, and development projects of civil society.
- Activities to support education in Syria, including but not limited to: fighting illiteracy, promoting education and access to people, projects and support education reform.
- Activities to support development projects (non commercial) according to which Syrian citizens directly, including but not limited to: combating the spread of infectious diseases, promotion of maternal and child health, sustainable agriculture, and assistance in the provision of clean water.
Thus allowing financial institutions to U.S. companies trading in securities and money transfer companies, to transfer money for expenses of operating the work of non-governmental non-US and non-Syrian, provided that the financial transfers across the Syrian government or any of the persons applied to them penalties.
In addition to that, the license allows for non-governmental non-US and non-Syrian, that the financial operations with the Syrian government, what is necessary for the activities mentioned above, including but not limited to: payment of taxes, import duties, fees for approvals, licenses, or public services from the government Syria.
Second license:
Allows financial institutions to U.S. companies trading securities and money transfer companies, to transfer money for expenses of operating the work of diplomatic missions, non-US and non-Syrian or consular functions in Syria, provided that the financial transfers across the Syrian government or any of the persons applied to them penalties.

QUESTION: And lastly, there has been reports that (inaudible), volatile times ahead with a grouped – military groups congregating outside the Syrian army. Do you have any comment on that?

Higher Committee held its first meeting for the elections yesterday in the plenary Court of Cassation in Damascus and issued the decision No. 1 / / judge to form sub-committees in the judicial districts for the rest of the provinces.
According to the Commission's decision that under the provisions of Legislative Decree No. 101, date 03.08.2011 and the provisions of Legislative Decree No. 374 of 2011 decided the Supreme Committee for the elections to form sub-committees in the judicial districts as follows:

The Committee discussed the joint Syrian-Lebanese security at points of al-Dabbousiyyah and al-'Abboudiyyah during its meeting today at the center of Lebanese General Security in the town of slavery on the ground and ways of overcoming the confusion of traffic resulting from the direct use of the Lebanese side of the new offices at the point of al-'Abboudiyyah in the border public security and customs.
A statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting of the National Agency quoted the Lebanese media that it was decided to extend the passage of trucks between the two countries at four in the morning until five in the afternoon of each day instead of trucks crossing from eleven o'clock noon until four o'clock in the afternoon.
The statement noted that it was assigned to riders of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces organize the passage of trucks and cars on the international road leading to the crossing point into al-'Abboudiyyah inside Lebanese territory as the meeting asked the Lebanese authorities to work fast to expand the international highway from the Lebanese side and resurfaced and the allocation of spaces customs and wide from the Lebanese side as garages for trucks.

Idlib, (SANA) - Child Mohammad Abdul-Aziz Dahrouj on Thursday was martyred after being shot by an armed terrorist group in Khan al-Sobul Village in Idlib Province on the International Highway to the north of Ma'arat al-Nua'man City.
Gunmen, who were inside a black car without a plate, opened fire on the child near the shop of his father which sells bread.

HOMS / Idlib, (SANA) - Three law enforcement members were martyred on Thursday in an ambush set by an armed terrorist group on al-Hwash road near Tall Kalakh in Homs governorate.
A source at Homs Police Command told SANA correspondent that the martyrs Ahmad Haider, Yasser Dardar and Ahmad Amin were attacked by an armed terrorist group which opened fire at them while performing their national duty in preserving security.
Citizen Amr Mohammad al-Tarfi was transported to Homs National Hospital after he was found dead with gunshot wounds in al-Jossiyeh area in al-Qssair.
A medical source said that the hospital also received citizen Ahmad al-Debjan from Um al-Amad village with several gunshot wounds as he was targeted in Dier B'albeh neighborhood in Homs.
In Idlib, Pharmacist Wassim al-Yousef from Khan Sheikhon was abducted and found shot in his leg by the fire of an armed terrorist group few hours later.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Terrorist Bilal Abdelhalim Hassoun confessed to being a member of an armed terrorist group that assassinated Dr. Hasan Eid a few days ago in Homs, in addition to opening fire on military personnel, civilians, funerals and schools.
In confessions broadcast by the Syrian TV on Wednesday, Hassoun confessed to murdering Dr. Hasan Eid at the request of a man called Jassem Afara because Dr. Eid worked at Homs National Hospital and treated injured people, adding that Afara recruited a group to keep watch over Dr. Eid two weeks prior to the assassination.
Hassoun, a blacksmith living in Bab al-Siba'a in Homs who was born in 1985 and was arrested four times for various charges including a narcotics charge, said that he planned the assassination with Bilal Oudeh, Bilal Awwameh, Yousef al-Hosni, Omar al-Hosni and Jassem Afara in Bilal Oudeh's house.
He said that each member of the group carried a rifle and a pistol and took two cars early in the next morning to Jeb al-Jandali where Dr. Eid lives, with Hasoun and another gunman waiting on one corner while another pair waited at the opposite corner, while the rest waited two buildings away from the doctor's house.
"When Dr. Eid came down from his house and turned on his car, Jassem Afara, Hilal al-Douri and Osama al-Dada approached him and opened fire on him, killing him," Hassoun said, adding that Afara then ordered them to retreat and headed to Bab al-Siba'a.
Afterwards, where Hasoun was given a pistol to give to a man named Mamdouh al-Masri and was arrested on the way.
Hassoun confessed to opening fire on army personnel and civilians, saying that the group headed to an army checkpoint in two cars without license plates and opened fire on the military personnel for half an hour, with one of the terrorists firing RPG rounds.
He said that a man called Mahmoud Salameh aka Abu Khaled used to bring them firearms and RPG rounds from Wadi Khaled in Lebanon with the help of a man called Iyad Berakdar, adding that Afara paid for the weapons.
Hassoun said that he committed his crimes for money, starting with participating in protests in exchange for SYP 500 given out by Afara. Later, Afara gave him a pistol and camouflaged military clothing and instructed him to wear them and walk behind protestors and shoot at them to make people think that security forces are opening fire on protestors, promising him 1,000 pounds for each time he shoots at the protestors.
"After three days from shooting at protestors, Afara came and asked me to shoot at mourners in funerals taking place in Bab al-Siba'a area and I agreed… I then started attending each funeral and opening fire at mourners in exchange for 1,000 pounds for each time," he said.
Hassoun said that Afara told them that no student must go to school, and so they used the two aforementioned cars to al-Istiklal School where Afara entered the teachers' room and prevented the teachers from giving lessons, telling them that they will also prevent parents from sending their children to school. After that, they opened fire at the school's gates to scare children from attending, and on the next day they went to another school and opened fire on its gates.
