Syria, FAO Cooperate in Carrying out Significant Projects

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform has carried out several projects in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the framework of the joint technical cooperation between the two sides including cooperation projects funded by the FAO, and other projects funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Assistant of FAO Representative in Syria, Salim Zahwa said that there are many projects directly funded by the organization such as the technical cooperation projects (TCP), in addition to the Telefood projects.

He indicated that the underway projects cover all the agricultural sectors including the project of developing the organic agriculture implemented by the Agricultural Guidance Directorate and funded by the Italian Government with a budget of USD 2 millions.

The project of integrated management of forest fire is also implemented by Forests Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture with the participation of local bodies, and the project is funded by the Italian Government with a cost of USD 1,100,000.

The project aims at allowing the locals to participate in forest fire management, in addition to building capacities of the bodies concerned in forest fire.

The other implemented projects include the project of pesticides safe disposal, and the project of building capacities in the domain of sustainable forest management planning whose budget exceeded USD 300,000.

The FAO works on implementing a project on setting an agricultural strategy and policy to achieve the agricultural development and food security at al-Ghab area in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture with a budget of USD 474,000.

Zahwa indicated that the FAO also works on introducing new crops which have big economic value to Syria with the aim of supporting the national income, improving the living conditions of the farmers and curbing farmers' migration to the cities.
