BEIRUT, (SANA) – Former Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said that Syria is witnessing a spring embodied in the Syrian people's adherence to resistance and to the political stances taken by their leadership.
In an article published in the Lebanese al-Binaa newspaper on Tuesday, Lahoud added that the 'surrender approach' of Arab regimes led them to resort to armed sedition in Syria to find a way out of their failure.
He stressed that the Syrian leadership succeeded in creating a civil society that goes beyond sectarian and religious differences, adding that this success united the Syrians against the enemies.
He underscored that the Arab League (AL) flagrantly violated its own charter, adding "AL resorted to an external side that had occupied the Arab lands for centuries."
He pointed out that this side is blindly following the unilateral power in the world and opening wide connections with Israel despite the barbarian attack against its ship, Marmara.
He added that all Arabs are, eventually, targeted by the Greater Middle East project, concluding that repercussions of the project have been witnessed in some Arab countries.

Syrian tension with Turkey takes its toll on local economy

Though Turkish exports have not been seriously impacted by a series of sanctions slapped against neighboring Syria because of the violent crackdown on civilian protestors, the local economy in the bordering provinces that used to trade with northern Syria have sharply felt the worsening ties between former close partners in trade.
The number of Syrian tourists travelling to border provinces like Gaziantep, Hatay, Şanlıurfa and Kilis dropped dramatically in recent months, taking a huge toll on small shopkeepers who rely on daily trade from Syria.
Hikmet Çinçin, the chairman of Antakya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Today’s Zaman that Hatay, which used to have an export figure of nearly $100 million to Syria annually, has been very negatively affected by the flare-up in tension between the two countries.
“The unregistered trade [volume], mostly because of Syrian tourists, between Turkey and Syria was as high as $400-500 million dollars annually. And the revenue of this trade, which was to a large extent shared between Gaziantep and Hatay, has stopped in the last couple of months,” Çinçin told Today’s Zaman. Two shopping malls were built in recent years in Hatay province, and still another is under construction, mostly because of the positive effect on trade of Syrians paying daily visits to the province to do their shopping.
As a reaction to Turkey’s announcement of “smart” sanctions targeting only the regime leadership while avoiding hurting Syrian consumers, Damascus has announced it suspended the free trade agreement with Turkey. “There are cancellations even for the goods which were about to be shipped. Syrian businessmen have cancelled their orders, given that the price has risen by as much as 30 percent because of the suspension of the free trade agreement,” Doğan Narin, president of Businessmen Association of Turkish Arab Countries, told Today’s Zaman
Adding insult to the injury, foreign truck drivers have to pay nearly two and a half times more for fuel as the price per liter has increased from 30 to 80 Syrian liras. And the toll the truck drivers have to pay was also doubled. “This has made Turkish goods too expensive for the Syrian market,” Narin said.
Hatay, with more than 1,650 trucks active in the province, has the second largest truck fleet after İstanbul. “The transportation firms have been paying installments to financial institutions for 1,400 of these trucks,” Çinçin noted.
Thanks to its geographical closeness facilitating daily trips to Syria, Hatay has been a bright spot for congresses and dealers meetings in recent years, but now the province’s popularity is bound to be hard hit by the deterioration in the relations. Noting that Syria is not any Middle East country for Turkey, Turkey having blood ties, a common language, nearly 40 per cent of the people in the Hatay province speaking also Arabic, with Syria, “The Syrian policy has to be very well mediated upon. Everything has been negatively affected by all this in Hatay.” Çinçin added.
Another major provider for Syria is Gaziantep province, which, Mehmet Şeker, Gaziantep deputy for CHP, supposes is responsible for 20-25 per cent of the total Turkish exports to Syria. But Şeker believes that when the unofficial trade is also included, then the trade volume, which is 2,5 billions, rises to nearly 8 billion dollars between Syria and Turkey. And from the unregistered luggage trade Gaziantep gets a much bigger share than 20 per cent, claims Şeker. Before the relations got tense with Syria, Gaziantep, like Hatay province, used to be a center of attraction for the Syrians. It is widely believed that the number of visitors the province was receiving monthly from Syria was as big as 60 thousand; and this figure has now fallen to around 3 thousand. “There used to be Syrians who would come to Gaziantep to get medical help. But now all that has stopped” Şeker has told Today’s Zaman.
But Mehmet Özmen, head of the Gaziantep Free Trade Zone, does not quite agree. He consedes that the province has been negatively affected, but he stresses the loss is not that great; given that “Syria’s part in Gaziantep’s foreign trade, which has an exports figure of nearly 5 billion dollars yearly, is minor indeed.” He also finds that an 8 billion-dollar export figure looks a little exaggerated.
Kilis is still another of the hard hit border provinces. Mehmet Özçiloğlu, head of the Kilis Chamber of Commerce and Industry, put it frankly: “Our trade with Syria has stopped completely.” The trouble is more deeply felt in Kilis, given that the trade there is largely dependent on the dealings with Syria. “One thousand trucks used to carry cement from Kilis to Syria. Syrians used to come for shopping daily; that has also has stopped. The trade has diminished by 95 per cent.”
Şanlıurfa, which used to get around 200 thousand visitors yearly from Syria, is another province hard-hit by the crisis. The business, which is mainly exportation of cement, went on as usual till the end of October, but in November our exports has dropped by half, Sabri Ertekin, head of Şanlıurfa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has told Today's Zaman. In the first eleven months of this year, Şanlıurfa's total exports figure is 164 million dollars, of which nearly 70 million is exports to Syria. And Ertekin believes that will also drop sharply with the suspension of the free trade agreement by the Syrian government.
Turkish transporters are also very negatively affected; Syria being not only an export market for Turkish goods, but also a transit country through which trucks drive all the way to the countries in the Arabian peninsula. There are 500-600 trucks waiting at the Syrian border at the moment, and transporters are looking for alternative routes over Iraq. After the steps taken by the Syrian government, the cost of each truck headed for Syria for transporters has now risen by 850 dollars, while the rise is around 1.500 dollars for transit transportation, which makes the Turkish goods expensive for the Syrian consumer. Mustafa Yılmaz, Member of Board of the International Transporters' Association (UND), informs that the number of trucks doing transit transportation by Syria was around 45 thousand last year. And now transporters was waiting for Turkish officials to reach an agreement with the Iraqi officials to use the Habur gate to reach destinations such as Jordan, and countries in the Arabian Peninsula.

ANKARA, (SANA) - Turkish citizens and observers condemned the involvement of the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in targeting Syria through harboring terrorists who are infiltrating into the Syrian territories, which has been clearly exposed by the recent operation by the Syrian authorities in which they foiled an infiltration attempt of the kind.
They said that article 90 of the Turkish Constitution provides for prosecuting those who seek to change a political system by force with the punishment of high treason, wondering how Turkey supports those who committed treason.
On the other hand, a number of Turkish observers saw in the policy of the Development and Justice Party government a pursuit towards fragmenting the region according to U.S. agendas and dominating it through ready-made governments to break any stances or forces against Israel or the US.
The Turkish observers denounced the stances taken by their government which has turned into a U.S.-Zionist pincer against Muslims in general and the people of the Middle East in particular, expressing surprise over the government's escalated policy against Syria which raised more concern of a dark future awaiting their country.
In an interview to the Syrian TV, Deputy Chairman of Turkish Saadet Party Mustafa Yilmaz said that the Turkish government is making a big mistake by harboring armed men operating against Syria, adding that there might be differences and conflicts between Syria and Turkey, but these can be resolved through dialogue.
Yilmaz expressed astonishment at the Western countries' policy in dealing with the Syrian crisis and their desire to interfere in Syria's internal affairs, while they have refrained from taking measures to impose economic sanctions towards Israel to stop its crimes.
The Turks described the Turkish sanctions against Syria as "very shameful and greatly unfair".
