  1. Thank you for this info about Local Election results in Aleppo. I have been finding it difficult to get info about the Local Election results nationwide, including Aleppo. I especially want to know the turnout rate. SANA is not reporting it.

  2. Hi, Parviziyi!
Many many thanks for your comment.

Before answering your comment today, your previous comment was blocked automatically by blogspot.com, I suppose, perhaps because your message contained a lot of links. The message was published since then.

I've been overwhelmed by a massive flood of news about local elections, the Arab League, Iran's support, economic hardship, energy crisis, etc. I have an impression that I had to abandon many important news which, otherwise, have to be recorded.

Concerning the turnout rate, the information I have is:
    ---------------
Ambiguous turnout rate (just high or low)

In Harasta, Douma, Jobar in Damascus countryside, the rate was not high because residents were threathened to be kidnapped if they vote. (Someone sticked a paper on each door in the area.)

In Daraa province, busy in Daraa city, but no women seen in the countryside.

In Deir al-Zor, high in the countryside, but moderate in the Deir al-Zor city.

    Good turnout in Hama.

In Latakia, the rate depends on the polling stations. Very high in one place, but less than 400 votes at 03:00 p.m. in another. The observer explained that people in Latakia usually vote in the last minutes at night.

In Idlib province, many candidates could not complete their application processes. Thus all of around 100 candidates who could complete the process have won the election without competition.

Out of 157 constituencies in Idlib province, the voting was conducted in 72. Voting was cancelled in 85 constituencies, of which the number of candidates did not reach the quorum in 57, reached the quorum but voting was abandoned due to security concerns in 27, and no description in the remaining 6 constituencies.

In Homs, the turnout rate was higher in the countryside than in the city. The rate was not good in some hot spots. Especially in 'Akrameh, Wadi al-Dahab, Wadi al-Walid, the polling stations were completely calm and deserted.

The rate was high in Tallkalakh and al-Haulah (Houlah) which are main spots of anti-government demonstrations. The rate was very high in al-Makhram.

  6. Thank you very much for your several replies.

Under the new Elections Law, each candidate (and his representatives) can monitor the vote counting, and raise formal objections about how the votes were counted, and then the objections are considered by a tribunal of supervisors. As evidenced by the links you gave, a great many objections were lodged in practically every province. This delayed the results. There wasn't a similar objection process in place for the Local Council Elections in 2007. The voting happened on 26 and 27 August 2007 and the results were announced by SANA on the evening of 29 August 2007. See http://www.sana.sy/print.html?sid=136607

The official turnout in Local Elections in Syria in 2007 was 50%. It was 38% in the 2003 elections.

Once again I send my Shukra Kteer for NewsFromSyria.
