BEIRUT: Damascus' Mufti Sheikh Adnan Afyouni met with Catholic Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai Wednesday in Bkirki, north of Beirut.
Afyouni, who headed a delegation and was accompanied by Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel-Karim Ali, thanked Rai for his most recent statements.
After the one-hour meeting Afyouni told reporters that "the visit was successful and several statements by the patriarch were clarified."
When asked whether he had extended an invitation to Rai to visit Syria, Afyouni said there would be high-level coordination between the two on the matter.
During a visit to Paris earlier this month, Rai expressed fear about Christians in Syria should a popular uprising, now in its sixth month, succeed in toppling President Bashar Assad.
The patriarch, whose comments stirred controversy in Lebanon, reportedly warned France and the international community against supporting the uprising, voicing fears the Muslim Brotherhood could fill the political void should it succeed.
He also urged France that Assad should be given a chance to carry out his promised reform program.
International pressure has intensified on Syria over what rights groups say is a brutal crackdown by Damascus on protests calling for the departure of Assad. The United Nations says some 2,700 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the unrest that began in Mid-March.
Syrian authorities deny targeting protesters, blaming "armed terrorists gangs" for the deaths.
The Syrian delegation Wednesday said the visit to Lebanon was aimed just for talks with Rai.
