The Daily Star

BEIRUT: The Iranian envoy to Lebanon said Tuesday that sanctions against Syria are ineffective, expressing support for demanded reforms under the leadership of President Bashar Assad.

We, as a country, have experienced all of these stages [of sanctions] for 23 years and we have come to the conclusion that these methods are old now and will not affect any country in the world,” Ghadanfar Rukn Abadi told reporters following his meeting with Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour.

The Arab League Sunday agreed to impose punitive sanctions on Syria that include a travel ban on top Syrian officials and a freeze on assets related to the government.

The sanctions follow the troubled country’s failure to agree on a protocol regarding the observatory body of the league aimed at monitoring the implementation of an Arab plan designed to end the crisis in that country.

Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Moallem hit back at Arab countries over the sanctions Monday, saying that Syria would be able to weather the sanctions and emerge stronger from this situation.

Abadi said that the Islamic republic supported reforms in the country under the leadership of Assad, adding that Syria as a people and a government were capable of resolving problems.

“We have declared our position that the Syrian situation should be resolved internally,” the ambassador said, reiterating Iran’s rejection of any foreign intervention to end the crisis in Syria.

Asked about his meeting with the social affairs minister, Abadi said there were seven pending agreements between the two countries, urging the Lebanese government to implement them as soon as possible.

The agreements are related to combating drug addiction and illiteracy, and in the fields of rehabilitation of disabled persons and elderly care.
