»Turkey's henchmen in Syrian Kurdistan are responsible for the unrest here«

KURDWATCH, November 8, 2011—Salih Muslim Muhammad (b. 1951, chemical engineer, married, five children) has been chairman of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian branch of the PKK, since 2010. Out of fear of political persecution, he fled to Iraq in 2010, where he stayed at a PYD camp in the Gare Mountains. After the dissident protests began, he returned to Syria along with other PYD members. The day after his arrival, he took part in a PYD rally in al-Qamishli. In a conversation with KURDWATCH, Salih Muslim Muhammad speaks out about the PYD's role within the Syrian revolution and about its activities in Syria.

KurdWatch: A few weeks ago Duran Kalkan, a member of the leadership council of the Kurdistan Union of Societies (KCK) said that the PKK in Syria is in a fight against the AKP. Cemil Bayik, another member of the KCK leadership council, allegedly said that the PKK will wage a war against Turkey if Turkey gets involved in Syria's internal affairs. What does the PYD think of this?

Salih Muslim Muhammad: Yes, this is our position as well. We have the same philosophy and ideology. What is meant, however, is political war. If Turkey positions itself against the existence of the Kurds, then we will not be silent about it. In the last ten years, in which Turkey has maintained good relations with the Syrian state, it has also installed many henchmen among the Kurds. Turkey's henchmen in Syrian Kurdistan are responsible for the unrest here. Turkey is afraid that the Kurds in Syrian Kurdistan will receive their rights.

KurdWatch: Who are Turkey's Kurdish henchmen?

Salih Muslim Muhammad: All those who are currently sitting on the Syrian National Council and who have signed the agreement with Turkey. We do not believe that they know what is happening around them. We consider anyone who does not publicly take a stand against the Turkish position to be one of Turkey's henchmen.

KurdWatch: Representatives of the Kurdish Union Party in Syria (Yekîtî) and the Kurdish Freedom Party in Syria (Azadî) sit on the Syrian National Council. Just like the PYD, both parties are also members of the Kurdish Patriotic Movement in Syria.

Salih Muslim Muhammad: Yes, we know that. We have expressed our displeasure to them. We also demand a clear stance from them. Perhaps they are unaware of what is written in the Syrian National Council's agreement with Turkey.

President Gül warns Syria not to play PKK card against Turkey
http://www.todayszaman.com/news-262086-president-gul-warns-syria-not-to-play-pkk-card-against-turkey.html
08 November 2011, Tuesday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

Turkish President Abdullah Gül has warned Syria not to use the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) against Turkey, indicating that he hopes that the neighboring country does not do the same mistake it did in the past by hosting PKK terrorists.

Speaking to Britain's The Financial Times on Monday, Gül recalled that Syria previously hosted members of the PKK, which the US, the European Union and Turkey all proscribe as a terrorist group, and urged it not do so again.

"I would strongly suggest and would expect that they would not get into such a dangerous game," he said. "Even though I do not think they would do that, we are still closely following the matter."

Turkey, once a close ally of the Syrian president, has gradually toughened its criticism of the Syrian regime for its brutal crackdown on anti-regime protests. Last month, Erdoğan slammed Assad, suggesting that Syria would be the next country on the Arab Spring list and that Assad would eventually be ousted by his own people.

"Those who repress their own people in Syria will not survive. The time of autocracies is over. Totalitarian regimes are disappearing. The rule of the people is coming," Erdoğan also said in September in Libya while addressing the Libyan people.

Claims emerged recently that Syria may use the PKK card against Turkey in response to Ankara's strong criticism of the Syrian administration.

During the interview, Gül also pushed back at Iran's efforts to depict Turkey's line on Syria as a bid to curry favor with Washington.

"When we talk to Iran, we always tell them that we are not against the Syrian regime due to pressure imposed by any other country," Gül said. "It is because of and for the people of Syria," he added.

Gül said Turkey's success in the last decade in many areas impressed the Arab world. "Turkey's success, especially during the last decade, has impressed the Arab world," he said, stressing his nation's status as a secular, democratic, free-market Muslim majority country. "For that reason they are following us closely and for that reason we have indirect influence."

As for Turkey's European Union bid, Gül insisted Ankara will press on with its bid to join the EU, even though some EU member states have, he says, begun to alienate public opinion with their "negative attitudes". "Right at the moment we are doing much better than most of the EU countries in terms of the Maastricht criteria," he said.

Commenting on the US-Turkish relations, Gül said "the period we are going through is the healthiest relations that we ever had with the US."

DAMASCUS: Syria's opposition on Tuesday urged the Arab League to stand strong against President Bashar al-Assad's regime as the United Nations said its crackdown on dissent has left more than 3,500 people dead.

In a letter, the Syrian National Council urged the pan-Arab bloc "to take a strong and effective position against the Syrian regime commensurate with the dangerous development of the situation in Syria."

It wants the League to freeze Syria's membership, impose economic and diplomatic sanctions, and seek the referral of allegations of genocide and other human rights violations by the regime to the International Criminal Court.

The council, which groups the main opposition currents, focused its appeal on the central city of Homs, after declaring it a "humanitarian disaster area" in need of "international protection of civilians."

Homs is the only major city to remain outside the Assad regime's control after military operations in Hama further north, Deir Ezzor in the east and the coastal cities of Latakia and Banias.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 civilians were killed across the country on Tuesday, among them a girl who died in Homs as soldiers pressed a crackdown on dissent.

"A civilian was killed during raids in the neighbourhood of Baba Amro," where soldiers were searching for people wanted by the regime's security services, the Britain-based rights group said in a statement.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the situation in the besieged neighbourhood as "appalling," with residents deprived of food, water and medical supplies for a week.

In another neighbourhood of Homs, "a girl was killed by the explosion of a rocket that hit her home," the Observatory said.

And in Qusayr, near Homs, overnight clashes pitted soldiers against gunmen presumed to be defectors.

"Eight gunmen and security agents were killed in an ambush by armed men, probably army defectors," south of Maaret al-Numan, a town in Idlib province near the border with Turkey, it added.

Also in Idlib province, security forces shot dead a young man and another man was killed by gunfire coming from a checkpoint in the region's eponymous capital, the rights group said.

BEIRUT: For a fourth day in a row, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri took part in a live Q&A session on his Twitter account Monday in which he blasted President Bashar Assad for what he described were "massacres" committed under his leadership, saying change was needed in Syria.

Hariri also expressed his belief that Lebanon under the present government headed by Prime Minister Najib Mikati would fail to fund its share toward the court probing his father's assassination.

"Before answering questions I want to condemn what happened today in Homs and the atrocities that Assad is committing," Hariri, under the Twitter name of @HaririSaad, wrote in his first tweet Monday night, referring to recent reports by activists that troops loyal to the Syrian leader had moved into a residential district of Homs after six days of tank bombardment.

Describing the events as "a massacre," Hariri warned that the Arab League should "move quickly" lest faith in the organization should falter.

Hariri's live Twitter session came hours after a statement from his office ruled out the possibility that recent posts under @HaririSaad on the popular social network were other than from the Future Movement leader himself.

"The press office of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri would like to point out that the only Twitter account that PM Saad Hariri uses to tweet, personally and directly, with his followers is: @HaririSaad," the statement said Monday.

Hariri, who fielded questions for some two hours, acknowledged he was a vocal critic on the subject of Syria and said he would continue speaking out against Damascus as "this regime must be faced no matter what and changed."
