Many Kurds are angry at the lack of condemnation from the Iraqi Kurdish government.

Experts say it is due to reasons of realpolitik, that the ruling Iraqi Kurdish parties have not raised their voice.

The Syrian government says the killing was the result of a regional power struggle between rival Kurdish parties - but the Iraqi Kurdistan regional Prime Minister, Barham Salih, echoed popular opinion here, when he posted on his Twitter that Syrian security forces were responsible.

"The Kurdish outrage threatens to open another theatre in the Syrian conflict, but as always, for the Kurds of Iraq, the stability and security of their own region is their first priority, and the Government is unlikely to involve itself in Syria's internal affairs."
