BEIRUT: Britain will implement a three-part action plan to support stability in Lebanon as the region faces unrest, British Ambassador Tom Fletcher told President Michel Sleiman during a meeting Wednesday.

The plan will include protecting Lebanon's financial system from the possible impact of international sanctions against Syria and increasing British training to the Lebanese army and security forces.

The third element of the plan would involve backing reforms that would generate economic growth and more external investment in various fields such as the energy sector, high speed Internet and business law.

"This program represents British confidence in Lebanon's independent, sovereign and stable future. To take it forward, there will be an intensification of high level visits and contacts between London and Beirut in the coming weeks," a statement from the British Embassy said.

The two officials also discussed the need for all countries to respect international obligations including U.N. Security Council Resolution 242 which calls on Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories it had occupied following the end of the six-day war in 1967.

They also discussed international resolutions concerning Lebanon including 425, adopted in 1978, five days after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, which calls for an immediate Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. It also established the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

The discussion also focused on U.N. Security Council Resolution 1757, related to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Sleiman and Prime Minister Najib Mikati have vowed to pay the country's 49 percent share of the court's budget.
