Turkish-born Sarkis Soghanalian sold weapons in Iraq, Nicaragua, Lebanon, but always said he was America's ally.

Born Sarkis Garabet Soghanalian on Feb. 6, 1929, in Iskanderun, Turkey

Born into the Armenian Orthodox Church, "he was no altar boy,'' Garo said. He carried a Lebanese passport but believed strongly in America's causes and wanted to help, his son said.

Soghanalian never became a U.S. citizen because "it gave the government...deniability,'' his son said.

Arrested several times, he once did two years but was generally released after judges learned he was on official government business.
