"I will say that our position remains that President Assad has lost his legitimacy to rule and should step down," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a news briefing.

"We support all international efforts that are aimed towards convincing the regime to stop attacking its own people and perpetrating violence against its own people, but our position on Assad has not changed," he added.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said on Wednesday in Cairo that the Syrian government has fully accepted the Arab League peace plan, which calls for stopping violence and withdrawing the military vehicles from Syrian streets, releasing detainees and holding dialogue with the opposition.

Anti-government protests have continued unabated across Syria for more than seven months with mounting calls for Assad to step down, while the death toll has hit more than 3,000.
