DAMASCUS, SANA_ Interior Ministry on Friday called upon citizens who were involved in carrying, selling, distributing, transferring or financing the purchase of weapons and hadn't committed killing crimes to turn themselves in and hand their weapons over to the nearest police station in their region from Saturday, November 5, 2001 until Saturday, November 12, 2011.

The Ministry, in a statement, said those who will turn themselves in will be released soon and this will be considered as a general amnesty for them.

The statement mentioned that this procedure is based on the state's care for its citizens and giving those who were misled and involved in carrying weapons the opportunity and due to its keenness on the public security on the advent of the blessed Eid al-Adha.

The US State Department advised day Friday the Syrians not to surrender themselves to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad after Damascus announced amnesty for those who hand over their weapons. Victoria Nuland a spokeswoman for the State Department told reporters, "I would not advise anyone to surrender to the authorities of the regime at the moment", expressing concern about the safety of doing so. The United States said yesterday she had not seen evidence that Syria take steps to implement the agreement with the Arab League. A spokesman for the U.S. State Department that "the Assad regime has a long history of broken promises and his hands stained with much blood."
